Meets His Friends at Cairo,

S. Brice was to-day at noon elected
to the United States Senate, re
ceiving a majority of votes in either
branch of the legislature. - In . the
senate Shaw, of Lima district,nom
inated Brice, and Gaumen, of
Zanesyille, seconded the nomina
tion. Schnider, of Cincinnatti,
nominated Murai Ilalstead, and
Massie, of Chillicothe, nominated
ex-Gov. Foster. The vote in the
senate stood: Ilalstead 1, Foster 14
and Brice 19. In the house a roll
call was demanded to bring in the
members. Hancock, who is sick,
was carried to the hall in a chair.
The only other democrats absent
were Troeger of Holmes, and Law
ter of Franklin, who is ill. Willis
and Blair, republicans, were ab
sent. Hunt, of Sandusky, present
ed the name of Calvin S. Brice,
which was seconded by Belleville,
of Montgomery. Representative
Branin named CharleB Foster, who
was seconded by Representative
Lawtin. On roll call the result of
the vote for Brice was received
with cheers. Pennell, a strong
Brice man and worker, voted for
Foster by mistake, and before he
could make a correction the house
was in an uproar, and threats were
made that the ball would have to
be cleared unless order was main
tained. The vote in the house
stood : Brice 57, Foster 52 and
Neal 1. Brice was declared the
choice of the house,having received
a majority of all the votes. The
result will be canvassed by the
senate and house in joint session
to-morrow. The joint result of the
two branches is : Brice 76, Foster
0(5, Ilalstead land Neal 1.

city have been in the habit of
cashing such warrants at face value,
and will beyond doubt do so again.

Their Punishment.

McConnell's court this morning
the opening argument of the mo
tion of the Cronin murderers for a
new.irial was begun by Attorney
Wing.
Judge McConnell this afternoon
granted the motion of John Kunze
for a new trial in the Cronin case,
but denied the application to the
principal defendants, Martin
Burke, Daniel Coughlin and Pat
rick O'Sullivan.

Joseph Rogers has severed his
connection with oarsman O'Con
nor. Rogers says: "In paying
attention to him I have been
obliged to .neglect my own work,
and my business is rapidly in
creasing." In reference to Ilanlan'B
remark that he would yet win the
championship, Rogers said : "I
don't think that he would have any
chance against O'Connor. Hanlan
is a great oarsman, but a greater
man than be has aspired fn the

STANLEY AND PARTY.
They Arrive at Cairo and Are
Greeted bv Their Friends.
Cairo, Jan. 14. Henry M. Stan
ley and liis party did not stop over
at Suez, as it was reported they
would, but proceeded for this city,
where they arrived this morning.
They were greeted upon their ar
rival by General Greenfelt, com
mander of the Egytian .troops and
Barring, British consu1 general.
TALK WITH A BRAZILIAN.
Captain Maurlty Returning to the
New Republic-Rubber at Para.
Captain Joaquiui Mauri ty, of the
Brazillian Navy, arrived in New York
from Washington, where he had been
attending the Marine Conference.
He was formerly commander of the
Aquidaton, the largest vessel of the
Brazilian fleet. He is on his way to
Brazil, tnd .sailed for Bio on the
steamer Allianca. In "peaking with
a Tribune reporter, he said that the
Brazilian Navy had sixty ships in all.
Siz ef these were ironclad' of the
latest pattern. "We are bnildingin
Rio now," he added, "a large man-of-war,
with power and speed which will
make it equal of any boat. We have
also ordered two boats in England
which will have a speed of twenty
knots an hour. Brazil, is, however,
able to build any boats necessary for
the navy in her yards."
In speaking of the revolution, the
captain said that Baron Ladario, the
ex-Minister of Marine, was one of the
severest men in the service, and capa
ble of almost any action. "It was a
surprise," he said, "that the Emperor
renounced his allowance after once ac
cepting it. But I do not believe that
it was due to the influence of the
house of Braganza in Brazil. The
men who moved Dom Pedro to this
action were, I think, the Ministers
who accompanied him on his journey
to Lisbon. Through such a course
only could they hope to regain in
iluence at home." Chancellor Red
man, of the Brazilian Consulate, when
asked what truth there was in the
d i? pa tch that Brazil would expel the
Russian envoy because Russia refused
to recognize the, new Republic, said
that sucli a statement was pure aon
sense. "Why, it it absurb," he
aided, because no country save

Harvey Padgett's Death on the
Lower Siuxlaw River.
Walton, Lane Co., Jan. 10.
As the mail carrier was passing
Padgett's last Tuesday a week ago the
latter requested him to hnng him
some tobacco, and as the young man
come back in the evening he hallooed
but rccieving uo reply he put the
tabacco under the fence and weut op,
supposing him to he out on the place
somewhere. As he went past again
the next Friday with the mail he
noticed the tobacco yet under the
fence and thought it strange that it
had not been found, and resolved to
make te trip fes quick as he could
and search for the old man as he came
back in the evenicg. But before he
got back he met a man that had been
to Padgetts and found him dead iu
his chair with a newspaper in his
hand and glasses in position showing
that he had been reading when his
light went out on the last day of 1SS9.
Padgett was 58 yaars old and was
born in New York, he was a sailor by
profession: was large oi stature, rough
in manners, always taking the law in
his own hands to punish an onence.

very generous, kind in distress and

ELEVATOR BURNED.
Loss SGOO.OOO Steamers Near by

TIat.ttmore- Jan. 13. The (Train
elevator known as Northern Central
elevator No. 3, with a capacity ot
750 000 bushels, the property of the
Baltimore Elevator Company,, was
burned to-night, rne eievwor was
worth $300,000, and the loss on corn
which the elevator contains is $280,
0C0, The corn was owned by indi
vidual shippers and was fully insured.
The British steamship Sacrabasco,
lying near the wharf, was entirely
destroyed by flames from the burning
elevator. The British steamers
Northern and Rio had their masts and
rigging and some of their upper work
destroyed. Three of the crew of the
Sacrabasco. are missing and it is be
lieved they were burned to death.
Four others were seriously burned.
The sailors aboard the Sacrabasco had
no choice but to jump into the water
and swim for : their lives. Some,
whose cries were heard, were picked
up after being in tbe water two hours.

In the extremely conservative town
of Windsor, in the Canadian province
of Ontario, an out-and-out annexa
tionist has been elected Mayor. This
is the first signal victory achieved by
those who are advocating closer trade
and political relations with ifie United
States, and there is great rejoicing
among them. Many ot he Canadians
believe this to be the beginning of the
end as regards the ultimate politics!
destiny of Canada. They conceive
that the thin end of the wedge has
been inserted and that a complete
severance cf Canada from Great
Britain is sure to follow.
It cannot be denied that every inter
est of Canada would be subserved by
annexation to add incorporation with
the United States. Canada, as regards
Great Britain, is only stepchild at
best, and the bond of affection, if it
ever existed, was worn out long ago.
The British Government regards
Canada only, a a source of a very
doubtful income, and the ruling
classes in England think of her only
as a convenient place' for the ship
ment of yonnger sons and the bltck
sheep of the flock who can find noth
ing to do in England, or who have
made themselves more notorious than
respected.' Canada pays Great Britain
a great deal of money each Tear for
the purpose of . maintaining that
shadow of royalty known as a Gov-ernor-General,
and all that the Governor-General
does, usnally, is to re
gard himself as in honorable exile and
to long fer the time when he can re
turn to England.
Whenever Canada gets ready to
come into the American Union she
will find the road smoothed and made

of the American republic jshe will be
heartily welcome, if not she will not
be interfered with by the United
States in any way; and that is tbe
whole question oi the so-called an
nexation of Canada in a nutshell. '

Pall of Snow in California Delaying
Trains and Damaging to Stock,
San Fkaxcisco, Jan. 13. Snow at
Sissons has delayed the Oregon train,
and it is not known when it will ar
rive.

Ykeka, Cal., Jan 13. A snow
storm of twentv-four hours ending
last night, covered the ground with
eighteen inches of snow. This is the
heaviest snow storm ever known in
Yreka. Great loss is anticipated to
stock in the surrounding country.
Those short of hay are getting sup
plies from Sacramento valley. Snow
on buildings in town is being shoveled
off to guard against danger, as the old
and new snow makes a heavy burden.
THE STORM. IN ;RASS VALLEY.
Grass Valley, Cal., Jan. 13.
There was a heavy storm of snow and
sleet, rain and wind yesterday. From
eight to fifteen inches of snow falling
and drifting. The narrow gauge rail
road is lieu up at uuera v ista.
J his morning, at Conway s a large
lumber shed succumded to the weight
of snow; lose one thousand dollars.
A shed at Murphy's lumber yard fell
dowr; loss $200. A shed at the gas
works fell, wrecking a buggy; loss
$250. A number of other flat build
ings, porches and sheds arc damaged.
Hie south xuba canal, supplying
water to mines for power, is almost
frozen up, and in consequence six
hundred miners are idle. Operations
at all the principal mines have ceased.
They Were Not Gnily.
London, Jan. 14. The motion
to commit the managers of the
London edition of the New York
Herald and Freemens Journal, of
Dublin for contempt of court for
publishing certain comments on
the O'Shea divorce case, was
argued to-day. The motion was
dismissed on the ground of in
formality in the prosecution; but
permission was given for a renewal
of the motion, if taken within a
week.
