THE SUNDAY PAPER.
There has been a great deal of
discussion upon the subject that
forms the caption of this article.
That discussion, too, has been of
ten bitter in invective, and, taking
the standard of a purely Sunday
paper as it has been presented to
the public, being the voicing of tiie
sporting and immoral part of the
community, therefnas been cause
for opposition and outspoken de
nunciation. Butjjinthe Sunday'
editions of the great daily news
papers of the country the denunci
atory opposition is uncalled for and
as useless asjspending Jthe breath
against the free air of tbe heavens.
The Sunday newspaper was
evolved by the demand of .the peo
ple, or it would never have, been
started, or if it had. could not have
lived. As it meets with such uni
versal demand and success, it is
obvious that there is no prospect
of ever making headway against
the Sunday paper, "or stemming
the tide cf its rapid progress.
The New York Tribune in re
viewing the first inception of its
Sunday edition, says :
"The policy enteredupon ten
years ago has been amply vindi
cated by the results. There have
been protests on the part of a few
readers, but the Sunday Tribune
has, in the majority of cases come
to be considered indispensable. It
is not necessary here and now to
enter upon a defense of the.general
policy of Sunday papers. They
are facts. They have come to
stay. Now and then, to be sure,
we hear of the ministers' meetings
which denounce them and urge
religious people not tojbuy.or read
them; but the protests are half
hearted and have no apprejiable
effect upon the community.
Everybody but the most hopelessly
ignorant knows by this time that
the work of preparing the Sunday
editions is practically all com
pleted befoie midnight on Sat
nrday. and that if any one of
the daily issuer is to be abjured
because the work on it is done on
Sunday it is the Monday paper
that should sutler. No ; the ques
tion with the newspaper editor of
to-day is not whether he shall pub
lish on seven days of the week, but
how he can make his Sunday
edition as good as possiole."
That expresses the situation
quite emphatically but truthfully,
and the kickers against the Sun
day paper are kicking themselves
out much faster than they are or
ever will the supposed evil that
they are working against. Sun
day papers are as great an institu
tion as any of the great institutions
of the. country.
The bursting of a waterspout in
China, resulted in the destruction
of much valuable property and dis
astrous loss of life. So densft is
ihe population in that country that
accidents of that nature are at
tended with an extraordinary loss
of life, much more so than in any
other country.
