EDITORIAL NOTES.
Fall sown wheat ought to be a
line crop next year, for the blanket
of snow protects and fertilizes it.
It is said that the mine from
which Stanton, the Baker City
murderer in 1S!5, brought in sev
eral ounces of placer gold has been
re-discovered and is likely to prove
a famous bonanza.
In- the death of Geo. L. 'Wood:?,
Oregon le one of its most
talented and pleasing public speak
ers, whose eloquence has carried
the spmpathies of the people in
many political contests.
A band of masked men rode
intojflamilton, Georgia, recently
and battered down the doors of the
jail and released the notorious out
law of Ilarrist Co., Willie Wallace.
Still we are told that it is all peace
and quiet in the south and that
there is no outlawry.
Tiis sound country is suffering
from a potato famine. The farmer
who raised and saved a good crop
of that universally eaten vegetable
last season, is in luck now fur the
market is ready and the prices way
up. Other crops may be king but
the potato is no slouch.
For r lax d . is suffering from a
water famine. Probably they will
store up rememberance of its
pinching and distress, to work
upon the sympathies of the next
legislature towards procuring those
non-taxable bonds in w hich to in
vest their spare ducats.
The Wide West, a steamer built
for river tratlie on the Columbia,
braved the w rath of old Pacific
ocean to reach the sound, but never
got there. Pacific took revenge
and piled her bones on the beach,
and the crew, thankful for an
escape with their lives, made a
tramp across the Olympic moun
tains to the setilements. Steam

The youngest daughter of Ex
Secretary Dayard.JIiss Ellen
Bayard, it is said is ab.jut to marry
Count I.ewenhaupt, a former
attache of the Swedish Legation at
Washington. If the American
girls all go for European counts
and lords the American young men
will have to turn the tables and
cross the water and capture tbe
European countessesjand lordesses.
God pity both the American girls
and boys in that predicament
however.
The Washington legislature as
sembled in Olympia, had their
most spirited election excitement
over the making of a chaplain.
The men who perambulate with
bass drums and tamborines were
on hand with a candidate but did
not win, fortunately for our chris
tian civilizttion. The disaffected
members over the election threaten
to have the chaplain's salary cut
off on the grounds of J inconstitu
tionality of the election.
The Nicargua Canal is being
pushed ahead as fast as prudence
and good management wiil war
rant. The Canal people, it ap
jiears, realizing the great magni
tude of their enterprise, are pro
ceeding very quietly and in a cauti
ous manner. Contracts and sub
contracts, with detailed specifica
tions, are being ?ery carefully and
thoroughly prepared. The recent
change of location of the Atlantic
terminus of the canal has solved
the problem of Greytown harbor,
which will be made one of the best
harbors on the coast.
Unfortunately the prospecLs
are that the irrigation subsidy
measures before congress aro like
ly to fail, and no appropriation will
be made for that purpose. It is
certainly a matter of regret that
guch is the case, for no other mat
ter of equal importance takes pre
cedence in the present congress.
Money wisely and judiciously
expended in that dilution would
do more towards advancing the
interests of the government and
enhancing the wealth of the coun
try liian any other method oi ex
penditure, and it i. to be hoped
that wiser - counsels will finullv
prevail and that the irrigation pro
jects will be inaugurated.
On: merchant marine is cue of
the most important questions to
consider, and congress is grappling
with it. Senator Frye's hi!) pro

i can .sailing vessels as wen as
steamships. Steam will never dis
place sail power for the transporta
tion of certain kinds of products on
long voyages, and if the United
States want to contest the carrying
trade of the world with Great
Britain and other foreign countries
aid must be extended in some way
to sailing vessels as well as to
those propelled by steam.
IJkath, more merciful and just
than man, lias stepped in and ter
minated the guttering, disgrace and
shame, of Mrs. Sonthworth, who
ohot and killed her paramour,
Stephen L. Pettus, on the streets
of New York city, not long ago.
She died in the Tombs prison be
fore she was brought to trial. More
sinned against than sinning, could
only be the verdict of a just recog
nition of her crime, but the .end of
earthly existence stops the worry
and the pain of living a life that
has been shorn of all happiness cr
chance for better living. Judges
and juries are but human, and the
divine recognition of the true situ-
J ation comes none to soon in a case
like this, when all hope of human
betterment is gone.
Germany is mourning for the
demise of their beloved Dowager
Empress Augusta, grandmother ef
the Emperor. Her amiability and
sterling worth made her the idol of
the ieople.
Look at my five-cent corner win
dow, it is the wonder of the town.
