iiranite is one of the most unsafe
materials, being filled with hydros
copic water in the pores of the
stone, which is converted into
steam by moderate heat, thereby
reducing the stone to sand and
quickly destroying the bearing sur-
.. ii.iiami.oo i in faces between the blocks by round-
-J? ' s a ! inir olF each corner of each separate
I stone. Marble is also a very un
i safe material, being reduced bv
lieat to lime. A good quality
sandstone may s.and lire a little i
longer, but there is nothing equal
to brick. Cast iron girders are
abso'utely unfit to use unless
buried in concrete so that the heat
of a fire can not reach them. Cast
iron pillars are exceedingly treach
erous, and may well be protected
by any of the customary non-heat
conducting materials which arc in
use for that purpose. According
to actual experience, about one
fifth of the losaes by fire are due to
causes which can not be foreseen
and guarded ngains", with due re
gard to economy in construction.
The other four-fifths are due to bad
construction, want of protection,
careless occupancy and criminal
negligence.

Siekra City, California was the
scene of a genuine snow avalanche
recently that carried away several
houses and buried people, causing
the death of seven people. The
occurence was most heartrending
in its circumstances, and makes
the slight inconvenience occasion
by cold weather in the valleys
seem as nothing compared with
the mountain gorge dangers.

The widow of a New York book

brain disease that he had suffered
from for twenty years, claims a

removed. Not many dead men
have brains that are valued so
highly, and the physician is prob
