A'lam h inmader, who ha been
grubbing on the farm of Warren
Johns, two miles southwest of
Salem, made a discoveiy Saturday
that made his teeth emitter. He
was grubbing out hazel brush and
his nx struck an Indian tomahawk.
Thi he unearthed, and continuing
the work of tearing out the brush
he soon came upon some bones.
The first or.es found were those of
the head of an Indian chief. The
neck was encircled by a string jf
shining beads consisting of hun
dreds of these various colored
globules. After finding the head
Mr. Fromador continued his search
and was rewarded by finding the
skeleton entire and in a good state
of preservation. The head was
intict, the teeth being sound and
beautiful in fact teeth that would
be a pride to anyone. This find
was covered with about two feet of
earth and ,vas so located as to give
no indications of having been
buried there. How many years it
has been resting there no one
knows, although many years must
have passed since the interment
took place, as the wooden handle
of the stone implement of warfare
had decayed almost entirely.
Salem Statesman.
Navigation on the Upper Kiver.
The captain of the steamer Lit
tle Salem, will make tlie attempt,
when tho water in the upper Wil
lauiette is at its highest this winter,
to go as high up as Eugene, where
he will contract a load of freight
for Salem and Portland. This is
something that has not been at
tempted on the upper river for sev
eral year3, but the captain feels
confident of success, as he has a
trim little craft of liht draft. At
Harrisburg the draw bridge will
have to be opened for him, and
this, it is thought by river men,
will not let his vessel pass, as the
channel has shifted to another
span of the bridge.
