over a large area. Humors were
rife in newspaper ollicesthat many
wires west of here were down and
travel delayed. The center of dis
turbances appears to have been at
Huron, where the wind veered to
the north, and the storm increancd
until it became a veritable bliz
zard, blowing fifty miles an hour.
Meaacriable experiences of two
years aco prevented people from
unduly exposing themselves om the
prairies, and no had results are
anticipated.
The storm has been marked in
places by a singular phenomena.
At Winona the rain descended in
sheets, and he town of Whaler
was Hooded. When the rain stop
ped the mercury fell rapidly to 30
degrees hi three hours. Business
is entirely suspended.
At one f these points electrical
disturbances preceded the fall of
snow.
Duluth was visited with a severe
blizzard, ushering in the heaviest
fall of snow of the season. Much
damage has been done in the city,
and the streets are blockaded.
Trains are delayed by drifts six
feet deep in many places.

Journal, in which he says he has
received no notice of having been
made co-respondent in the suit
brought by Captain O'Shea against
his wife for divorce. Parnell also
says that since 1SS0 ha has resided
at Captain O'Shca's house at
Eldham. He was frequently there
when O'Shea was absent, but the
latter was cognizant of his being

tenced to death bv eleciicity, ap
pealed to the general term of court,
claiming the sentence was uncon
stitutional, as it . provides an
unnecessary cruel manner of death.
The court has held that the evi
dence went to show that it was not
a cruel method of inflicting the
death penalty and that it was
therefore constitutional, and re
manded th prisoner to undergo
the punishment, Kemmler's enly
chance of escape is through the
clemency of the governor, which
is not likelv be exercised.

coroner's inquest upon tbe death of
the eight negroes lynched at Barn
well was held Saturday night at
the scene of the tragedy. It was c
terrible sight which the - jurymen
looked upon. On tbe left side ml the
road were the bodies of Ripley
Johnson and Mitchell Adams,
charged with tbe murder of llefl'er-
tnan. Aad on the opposite side
were the bodies of the eix negroes
charged with the murder of young
Kolet Martin. They were tied to
trees by the roadside, their backs
to the sapling. A rope was passed
around the trees and bodies of the
men, and when shot tbe weight of
their bodies had swung them down
on the ropes, and they occupied all
sorts of grotesque and revolting
positions.
On ballot the jury returned a ver
dict that the eight men had com
to their death from gunshot wounds
inflicted by Boiae party or parlies
unknown. After the inquest the
negroes were notified that they
might remove the bodies if they
desired. Tbe family of Ripley
Johnson and Mitchell Adams re
moved their bodies to their homes,
but the other six remained, and
were treated as murderers and out
casts. There were none to mourn
them. Neither whites ncr aegroea
waited to remove the bodies.
The town declined to bury
them because they were killed cut
side the limits, but offers have
been made to furnish coffins if the
negroes would bury them. The re
maining negroes declare they will
pull up and leave the country.
They assert that tnere will be no
retaliation.
