o'clock this morning the Union Pa
cific steaaaer Oregon ran into and
sunk the British fhip Clan-Mc
Kenzie at Coffin Rock, on th Co
lumbia, about ten miles below
Kalama.
The Clan-McKnzie is an iron
ship, and was on her way up from
Astoria, where she arrived a few
days ago from Rio Janeiro witli a
cargo, in ballast, consigned to
Laidlow h Co.
Coffin Rock, Dec. 27. The ill
fated Clan-McKenzie..-. came , to
anchor, last night till morning,' and
high tide shontd coxae ap. She
lay with ber bow up stream, and
was riding in the Oregon side oi
chanil, close ia to the shore.
Captain Sinapson, her master, said:
"My watchman, James Ward, was
on deck. We had just put out
fresh lights on the masthead and
the side lights! were, all put out.
She was straight wit the channel
and did not swing en inch."
"Leaving the watchman on
deck, I and the officers and crew
turned intp- the bunks. My wife
was with me.. I was soundly sleep:
ing, when Suddenly I was awaken
ed by a tremendous jar and crash
ing, and heard the water pouring
into the hold. I immediately got
the boats out, after finding' that
the chip was sinking, and took toy
wife and crew ashore. Two of my
men, both colored, were killed in
stantly. My bow was completely
torn away. The Oregon struck the
ship on the starboard side, just be
tween the stern and cathead, and
was not from the bide. My lights
were all out, as I wa not in the
channel."
At the time of the collision the
night was very dark and the eco.v
was fallini; heavily, with an up-
river wind blowing wtrongly in the
face of the vest?cl. It is not to be
wondered at, e.o say experienced
navigators, that the lights on the
British ship were not seen. The
wind and snow doubtless drowned
the voice of the watchman, who is
i-aid to have called out to the
master of the Oregon that the ship
ts in his way.
At the time of the collision the
Oregon was running under slowjbell
ami ran her bow on the port side
into the starboard bow of the Clan
McKenzie a distance of thirty feet,
tearing the Oregon's low complete
ly oif, and ripping up the decks
and railing for about forty feet from
the stein. In a few moments the
scene was anything but inviting.
Twenty men were sleeping in the
bunks, iind when they got out they
were, covered with wreckage. , Fish
was the only man rjnrt, and 'it' is
regarded as a miracle that many
were not killed oHtright. As soon
as she struck the -McKenzie the
Oregon attempted to back, but the
decks were jammed into the iron
side of the sailing vessel, o that it
was only-after several Jiours were
spent she succeeded, in disentan
gling herself. The staterooms and
the atecrage of the steamer were
all filled with passengers, who were
thrown out by the instant shock,
and soon tbe deck was tilled with
excited individuals all- anxio.ts to
learn the cause, extent and prob
ble danger of the collision. '
In the meanwhile the Oregon
drifted about 100 feet on the shore,
from which position she was soon
extracted. - :;

back to Portland, arriving at Ams
worth dock at 11:30 o'clock. '

sparring exhibition, and one scor
ing the greatest number of clean
hits or points in ten rounds will be j
declared the winner. Parties who
expect a bloodthirsty contest orl
knock out will be disappoiuted, as 1
the pavilion managers will not per
mit such. Hard blows will un
doubtedly be exchanged and u:i
exciting contest will be witnessed,
but it will not be a prize fight.

after 10 o'clock to-nilit three men
broke into the jewelry store of Paul
Rutteit, Mid were in the aet of carry
ing oil all the valuable stock when
they wore surprised by Mrs. Rutteit,
who pluckily grappled with one cf
the robbers. Siis was getting the !
best of him, when one f the ether 1
men drew a revolver aad blew the top
of her head off. The noise attracted
Rutteit, who was up stairs, bat before
he reached his wife she was dead, and
tha thieves had iled with the booty.
The murder created interne excite
ment, and larce numbers are out
arching for the thieves. Tbe
amount of valuables stolen is not
known.

Muggurumba, a telegraph station on

railway survey, which had been re
moved by Major Divas.
On November 9th the Governor of
Mozambique wired that Serpa Pinto
had requested the natives to lower all

this request was not complied with

Quillimane to be restored to the con
