Xaiuiville, Dec. 26. At a late
hour this morning intelligence was
received of the trouble at Clarks
ville, Tenn., between officers and
negroes, two ef the latter being
shot, one fatally and the other
seriouply. Frank Morrison, a
special policeman, attempted to ar
rest Bob McCutcheoa, colored,
when otber ntgroes interfered.
The police came in force, and one
of the negroes assaulted the chief
officer with a stick. The officers
then began firing with the resaltt
as giyen- The negroes are greatly
excited and troope have been
sent for.
Savannah, Ga., Dec. 26. Noth
addititional about the Jessup affair
lias been received, but a wild
rumor is afloat that there ac
serious trouble there this morning.
The military here, under com
mand of Captain Gordon, of Sa
vannah, is as follows: Georgia
Hussars, thirty-seven men, liruns
wick rifles, fifty and Graye, forty-
five. In addition to this there is a
force of 100 members of the differ
ent companies in tbe surrounding
counties. Tbe trouble yesterdaj
begun at 10 a. ii. Just as Chief
Marshal Leggett was making his
round he saw a netiro by the side
of a hotel rapidly firing a rifle. "lis
uob Urower," somebody said, as
the people began to pour out of the
at ores. The name of the notorious
outlaw and fugitive sent terror to
tbe hearts of the citizens who
watched the antics of Crower. "It
must be stopped," 6aid Officer
Leggett. He then went into a
store, and arming himself with a
rilie deputized William Austiii, Mr.
Jackson and W. 1. Reddish to arm
themselves and go with him to ar
rest tbe man.
Tbe following has been received
from Jessup: A posse of 20 men,
under command of S. White, left
for Lumber City to intercept
Brower and his iran" who, ft is'
rumored, have gone there for rein
forcements. Brower lives in Lum
ber City, and it is supposed if lie
goes out of McCallain'a Fwamp he
will go to his mother's. Firing all
along the picket keeps up, but
principally by boys.
A crowd of armed men have just
returned from a trip to the swamp
and report that four colored men
were found dead, but gave no
names.
The jail was broken into early
this morning and two ntgro pris
oners were riddled with bullets.
Another negro wan found at homo
shot through tbe heart, and one
with a wounded arm. It is re
ported that others have bcon
killed but the officer. have not
found them.
The search for bodies was kept
Up all day. Negroes are quitting
their homos aad moving to other
towns. A large nuaaber of negroes
were taken from their homes this
morniog and whipped, many of
them being prostitutes. A crowd
of white auen went to several
houses after breakfast this rooming
and compelled the negroes to
leave. Hussars have started for
the swamp, but tbe infantry com
pany of Brunswick will remain
till to-morrow. The swamp where
Brewer's gang is hidden will bo
searched this afternoon, and if
negroes are found, lynching will
probably follow. 1 he coroner now
is holding an inquest on the dead
bodies.

Schools Established,
Washington, Dec. 25. It is be
lieved that the report of the Sioux
commission, which will be out in a
few days, will recommend import
ant changes in the system of edu
cation of the Indians. The in
dustrial - training schools for In
dians in the Eastern states and
elsewhere away from the reserva
tions may not be altogether like
what the Sioux commission will
have to say of education in its re
ports, according to the summary of
it made public. Probably they
will consider, to begin with, that
the members of the commission
have wandered out of their prov
ince in discussing this subject,, in-1
astnuch as they were appointed to 1
purchase Hoiix lands, but as a j
iact it turned out that a fcood deal j

vation in Montana have a capacity

The Indians who have been here

pense of taking their-children to

is so great that the aggregate sum

reservations. The report of the
commission discusses the situation
aa regards the Indians in Minne
sota; the Dakotas, Montana, Wash
ington, Calilornia and tbe Indian
reservations.
In this connection the words of
Secretary Noble to the chiefs may j
be significant. After listening to
their requests for more schools he
said : "I have been glad to hear
so much spoken in regard to
schools. I am glad you have said
as much about schools as about
rations and clothes. I say to you
that there shall be no less rations
than heretofore, but there shall be
more schools."
While it is likely that no steps
will re taken to cripple any of the
industrial schools now in operation,
it is likely that an increased outlay
for Indian education on the reEer
vations will have the preference.
President Harrison informed a
California congressman, who called
upon him, that there will be no
Pacific coast appointments made
in all probability nntil after the
holiday recess.

The California Mine Disaster.

The latest reports from the Angles
