party at the conclusion of the four-'
teenth round, the referee declared'
the light a draw and refused to re-1
main on the ground. Sanith's
party evidently saw that their man
was beaten and broke into the
ring and interfered with the lair
progress of the tight.
Statin forced the fighting at the
start, hitting Smith several tiuaeb
on the chest and on the head.
The first to the fifth round wan
marked by hard lighting.
Sixth Slavin lands a terrific
blow on one of Smith's eyo.
Seventh Smith fought Siavin tn
the rope when one ef Smith'B
friends kicked Slavin, who, how
ever, remained silent.
Eighth Slavin again knocked
Smith down.
Ninth The mob surrounding the
ring struck Slavin several times.
Eleventh Slavin again, knocked
bis opponent down.
Thirteenth Slavin protested
against the treatment he was re
ceiving and appealed to the referee
for fair play. His appeal was
greeted with derision by Smith's
lriends, who shouted "police" and
bolted from the grounds. Slavin
remained in the ring, and Smith,
who had left when his friends ran
away, returned. The referee then
said it was impossible to receive
fair treatment lor Slavin, and de
clared the light the draw.
Slavin was full of fight to the
finish.
London, Dec. 23. The report re
ceived here of the Smith-Slavin
prize light in Belgium sayH that
Slavin showed all through the light
that he was the better man. A
number of rowdies at the ring
eides, armed with knuckles.dtisteis
and sticks, tried to reach Slavin
over the ropes and the Australian
was struck several times. At the
end of the thirteenth round Smith
ltdt the riii;,'. Slav:n remained and
claimed the fight, but the referee
would not award it to him. After
a short time Smith returned to the
rii;. During the next round there
was a great uproar all around the
l i u jr. At the close of the round
Siiiilh was verv sick, but Slavin
was perfectly well. It lasted 2
minutes.
It was reported at one time that
Slavin had been killed, but the re
port proved to be false.

treasury this morning a large pack
age with the following inscription :
"Contents of the rath compart
ments of the safe of the serjeant-
at-arms of the house of representa
tives, seal of delivery to the treas
ury of the United States 'overn-
ment. Such resolution of house
adopted December 21."
It is signed by Seigeant nt-arms
Leedom, Congressman Adams, of
the bucott committee, Assistant
Treasurer Whelpley and two ex
pert accountants. The package
contains upwards of $8300 in notes,
checks and other securities, repre
senting the moaey left by ab
sconding cashier Silcott.
The supreme court to-day grant
ed the senate of Virginia leave to
file a comblaint against the state of
Tennessee in the matter of the dis
puted boundary line between the
two states. Snbpccnaee were di
rected to be ist ued against the gov
ernor and attorney-general of Ten
nessee. The ways and means committee
was engaged to-day ia the consider
ation of the McKinley administra
tion.
The customs bill committee re
ports to complete the preparation
of a bill before the hearings on the
taritf begin.

assist all worthy institution;, but his
finances will not permit him to do so.
A solicitor for aid in behalf of the
women's hospital of this city called
npan President Cleveland yesterday
and informed him that the use of his
name as one of the contributors in
support of the hospital would be an
excellent help to the institution.
Cleveland said that all other appli
cants used the same argaaaent. Ha
said he would consult Mrs. Cleveland
about this particular request. Then
he added, signficantly: "The truth
of tbe matter, is that the demands
which are constantly made upon me
for aid are so numerous and come
from so many quarters that I have
sbaut mado up my mind to lear
New York in nrder to get away from
these requests "
WHITES VS. NEGROES AGAIN.
Fight ISetwceit a White Han and a
Negro Urines on a Race War.
St. Locis, Dec. 22. Meager re
ports have been received of a riot in
progress at Poots' Camp, Mie?:, sixty
five miles from Memphis. The
trouble was precipitated by a fiht be
tween a white mau and a negro, in
which tr.e latter was worsted. He
went out from town, collected a party
of friends and returned to clean out
the victor. The whites rallied and a
tight ensued, in v hich half the people
were wounded but none killed. Ihe
latest advices were that everybody
was in arms, aad further t-ouhlc ia
expected.
Later. Advices this evening state
that three of tha negroes were -it-rested
and jailed. About 11 o'clock
an unsuccessful attempt was made to
release the prisoners, by the buc's,
when a riot ensued, and two negroes,

tion. H expects to announce the re
mainder of the standing com ai it teas
of the House this week, Mr. Heed
has been called a lazy man, and per
haps lie is, hot if so its a great pity
that a lazy mat hasn't taen elected
speaker of the House liefore this, for
in this matter of appointing the com
mittees ho is ahead of all his recent
predecessors,
A joint resolution has already been
introduced in tbe Senate providing
for a Congressional recess from next
Thursday to Janaary C, and there ia
not the slightest doubt about its pass
ing botk Houses. The recess will not
however be spent in idleness. The
important committees will bt m ses
sion almost every day getting busi
ness in shape. Mr. McKinley, chair
man of the new ways and means com
mittee, proposes to go to work at
once upon the tariff bill which is ta
work at once upon ths tariff bill
which is to be passed at this session.
It is probable that what was knows
as the Senate tariff bill at the last
session of Congress will be used as the
basis of the new bill. Trusts too are
to be looked after by the same com
mittee. The election committee will
take up the contested election case
and push them through as rapidly as
may be consistent with justice to all
parties concerned.
The more that is known about the
defalcation in the office of the eer
geant-at-arms of the house the worse
things look for all concerned. A
committee of the house made a hur
ried investigation of the busiuosa
methods of that office, and in its re
port to the House said enough about
its looseuess to justify almost any
kind of rumors. Sergeaut-at-arma
Leedom's personal account was dis
covered to be SS50 short, and the
books show that he has used the Gov
ernment funds right along to disccunt
notes for menbers of the house, and
nut the profits in his own pockets.
The amount stolen by Silcott the ab -scending
cashier is within a fraction
oi S72.OG0, and who is to lose it ia
still a debatable question. Either
the Government or the members for
whres pay the money was ititerJed,
will have to be re6puusiblc, as it
seems to be generally conceded that
owing to the peculiar circumstances
surrounding the case nothing caa be
made out o' 'he $50,000 bond oP
Leedom. What makes the thing
look worse for all concerned, is that
uo ccrious effort has been made to
trace Silcott and try to bring him
back. The fact that Leedom and
Silcott have been the boon, companions
of a lot of fast Congressmen makes
many people believe, that Leedom and
quite a number of member. and ex
members of the house wonld be very
s.rry indeed to sec Silcott under ar
rest, for fear that their tarn might
come next.
The investigation of the books of
the office of the sergeant-at-arma
showed Speaker Reed's account to be
over drawn $1,934. This created a
big sensation when is first leaked out,
but was quickly rouelched, when Mr.
Reed's attention was called to it, by
the following statement from that
gentleman: "I have never overdrawn
my account, in fact have never draws
