After a night of broken rest on the

next morning we plunged in the

three years since, and after three
days search we found sufficient marks
to juKtify the establishing of a town
ship corner, and proceeding to busi
ness we fousd some very fine country,
Fiddle creek and Bear creek and some
bench land between ihe two creeks,
but the greater portion of land ia en
tirely worthless, very little that we
could lavel one-fourth chain aud some
places could' level but 5 to 7 links.
On the head of Bear creek was a large
body of dead cedar, the finest cedar
timber I ever saw, the couatry has
beer burned over no often that verv
little green timber is left. The north
face of a great many of the hills are
covered with a growth of young
alders from 3 inches in diameter down.
I suppose that the heat of the sun
kills the young trees on the south face
of the hills before the shade protects
the roots. Quite a number ef foils oc
cured among the men in climbing
over rough places but only one of
them was seriously injured. Y hi ta
ker was th: unlucky man, he started
down the mountain on a go as you
can gate, and brought up against an
old dead limb, and broke a rib from
which he is suffering very much.

condition of the streams, Surveyor C.
M. Collier concluded to pohtpoce

for Florence, by good luck in geting
boats we got to Florence some time

A Moslcal Tramp.
Here is an incident which clearly
proves how extremely fallacious is
the popular belief that all tramps are
worthless good-for-nothings and can
in no way recompense one fer an act
ot hospitality extended to them. On
one occasion a party of four men and
one woman were seated in the parlor
of a hotel not far tioui this ;ity. Ad
joining the parlor was the bar-room.
Leaniug against the bar, kifcurly
driuking, were snveral countrymen.
At one of the tables eat a tramp half
asleep. His arm was curled op, form
ing a support for his shaggy bead,
which was covered with a tattered
slouch bat of aurient manufacture.
Suddenly, through the half open
door, there came the sound of muuic;
the loungers stopped drinking for a
moment, but almost immediately re
sumed their occupation. Nobody
noticed the tramp. At the first
sound he had raised his head from the
table, and his eyes seemed glued to
the door through which the mneic
came. As it proceeded he rose and
tottered toward it, but jaet as he
entered the room the music stopped.
All eyes turned on the tramp, who
was making straight for the piano,
which he reached a moment later.
Lightly running his dirty fingers over
the keys, suddenly ho began to play
Mendelssohn's "Wedding March."
For nearly half an hour the tramp eat
thns, playing nothing but the choicest
classical music, with a touch and ex
ecution t'oat was itself a marvel. The
listeners sat astonished and in tilence
that was not broken until the tramp,
rising from the piano, took up hie hat,
and, going through the bar-room to
the door, disappeared down the
muddy road. Trmly men are some
times entertained by angels, unawares.
