Not t s-e our stoves and ranges
before buying is a mistake. Mis

offer were not bought as au experi

know what each stove will do, and
they were bought for cash, so the

YAOl'INA I5AT NOTES.
As soon as permission can be
secured from the railroad company
parties stand ready to put up a tel
ephone line between Newport and
Yaquina.
It is reported that a Mr. Norton,
a coal expert, who has been pros
pecting on Depot Slough, has
found a very large vein of good
good coal on l"red Wetzel'sland.
A gentleman in Poon, Iowa, has
sent a proposition to Mr. W. C.
Shepard proposing to start a first
class woolen mill in Newport, pro
vided they will take SfSOOO worth of
stock in the enterprise.
Among the enterprises now al
most assured to Newport in the
next few months are a saw and
planing mill, a woolen mill, a
teachers' institue and a telephone
line. Water works and electric
lights follow other improvements.
Last Saturday shortly before 1
o'clock the dam above town gave
way, or rather the water washed a
hole under the woodworks, the
water coining down the canyon i
with a rush, causing some little ex-1
citement among the residents of
that put of town, but it soon j

A GROWING INDUSTRY.
The Harness Jfaniifimtnrine Establishment ol
Messrs Thompson and Overmac.
j One of the important manufac
turing industries of Albany is the
i barness and saddlery establish-
ment of -Messrs Thompson & Over
man. A Herald reporter, who
dropped into their place of business
yesterday was surprised to note
that this lirm has recently added
extensive new machinery to their
business and are manufacturing a
line of work heretofore done only
in the East. They have employed
men expert in the work and make
all kind- of fine harness finishings
and mounted work, and the profits
that are usually paid to eastern
manufactures is saved to their cus
tomers by doing this work all at
home.
1 heir motto is wnat ig worth
doing is worth dcing well." They
buy only the raw mateiial and
manufacture everything they sell,
and as a result are developing a
business in this line that is in
keeping with the growing indus
tries of the city. Poth Mr. Thomp
son aid Mr. Overman are practical
; mechanics and personally superin-
j tend all work done. Their trade is
j fast growing and extending to all
i parts of Oregoii. They already
j actually carry the iargest line cf
heavy and light driving harness of
any house in Oregon, not except
ing Portland, and expect eventu
ally to increase this still more and
engage in tne wholesale business.
This they ate amply able to do as
they have now eveiy facility for
carrying on such a trade.
Mr. Thompson is a son of D. M.
Thompson, who for .'50 years pre
vious to his death had g iined a
13 i wide reputation for honest dealing
and tne present firm is carrying out
the policy of the old house in this
respect, and their business is
steadily increasing and keeping
pace with the wonderful growth ot
Albany. The name of Thompson
has been .-o long connected with
the harness business in this city
that tiiis house is recognized as
one ot the oldest and most reliable
in the country.
In addition to their immense
line of harness and saddlery they
carry a complete stock of horse
blankets, buggy robes, whips,
fanners and horsemen's supplies
generally, They pay cash and
being close, make no combination
I
rates ami are enabled to mve their
j -uioii.ers the mo.-t satisfactory
i prices.
; The proprietors are enterprising
! and thoroughly up with the times.
Their .-tore and work rooms are
lighted with electricity, and they
carry all the appliances necessary
for carrying on a metropolitan busi
ness of this kind, having the latest
and nio.-it approved machinery for
a class of fine work that is not
undertaken by any other house in
Oregon, enabling them to compete
with any of the establishments in
this line on the coast.
Ol AMUCATIONS OT VOTEItS.
Numerous inquiries are always
made about election as to who are
entitled to vote at the city election,
and some warm disputes sometimes
1 arise.
Sec. l."i of Albany's charier pro
vides: "No person is qualified to vole
at any election under this act who
is not entitled to the privilege of an
elector according to the laws of
this state, and w ho has not resided
in the city of Albany for the three
months next preceding such elec
tion, and in the ward in which he
oilers o vote, for thirty days next
preceding such election.''
The state law requires a resi
dence, w ithin the state for a period
of six months and within the
county 00 days immediately pre
ceding the election.

"This was kometime a paradox," as
Hamlet says. Since, however, the
people cf America and other 'ands
have been enabled to pit Ilosttttcr'e
Stc.majh Hitters against that unseen
foe, malaria, it is no longer a paradox,
but an easy possibility. Whatever
malaria evolves its misty venom to
.loison the air, and decaying unw hole
.onie vegetation impregnatir the
water, there, in the very btronghold
of miasma, is the auxiliary otent to
disarm the foe and assure efficient
protection. Fever and ague, bilious
remittent, dumb ai;ue and ague cake,
no matter how tenaciously they have
fastened their clutch on the system,
are lirst forced to relax their gra;
and eventually to abandon it alto
gether. Put it i preventive force
that should chiclly recommend the
Hitters to persons dwelling in malaria
'urscd localities, for it is a certain
buckler of defence against which the
enemy ,s poweilcs. Cures, likewise,
(lyspep;a. rheumatism, kidney and
billions ailments.
