How It Was Observed in This City The
ThankigiTiBf Turkey.
Thanksgiving J)ay was appropri
ately observed in this city yester
day. Union services were held at
the Congregational church, the
sermon being preached fcy Rev. J.
F. Stewart, pastor of the Christian
church. The scripture lesson was
read by Kev.,G. S.' llanlciter, and
prayer i;a. offered by Hev. U. L.
Rogers, JHov. Al. T. Meminger and
Rev. 1,. .J. Trumbull. Short ad
dresses were also delivered-by the
pastors of the several "other
churches. The choir rendered a
beautiful Thanksgiving song ser
vice, and the congregation joined
in the grand old song America.
An immense audience was present,
and the lecture room was thrown
open to afford room for all.
I An elegant dinner was served at
,' the W. C. T. IT. hall by the ladies
j ol the JIaptist church. The dili'er
i ent hotels and restaurants also
i served the national bird and cran-
berry sauce in their bil' of fare,
I which was discussed with satisfac
! tion by their guests. The banks of
J the city, the postollice and teh:
j tniph offices observed ihe same
j hours as on Sunday, and ihe peo-
pie generally took a half holiday,
i The people of Albany have much
I to be thankful for, and it is grati
fying to note that the poor of the
city were not forgotten in yester-
day's thanksgiving offerings. The
j city is growing, extending her boi-
bers and enjoying a marked degree
i of prosperity. Business and trade
' is increasing. The building and
puniic improvements in p. ogress
oilers work ami good pav lo those
needing it. .Many people from the
country and neighboring towns
were here to enjoy Thanksgiving
Day -md not less than 10,000 peo
ple joined in the observances of
this grand national holiday in Al

in a canyon in a strata ten feet be

their position anil surroundings',
they have been lying there for
thousands of years. The relics are
those of a mastodon and although
the skeleton is not complete, there
is sufficient bones to show that the
animal was twice as large as any
now found on tho face of the globe,
including even the huge Asiatic
elephant. In proportion to the
pints, and estimating according lo
the animals on earth nowadays,
the monster was certainly not less
than fourteen feet high. The joint
from the knee to the thigii is
thirty-one inches in length, and
the swivel joint is seven niches in

is only two inches, The bones are
in ex-client state of preservation,
