EDITORIAL SOTES.
A California physician has
entered into voluntary insolvency.
The health of this coast is not con
ducive to the physicians amassing
large fortunes.
It U said that Senator Allison
will shortly commit matrimony.
All the same the great state of
Iowa will retain him as their
worthy and efficient United States
senator.
The Secretary of State of Mis
souri makes wholesale devastation
among corporations that fail to
comply with the auti trust law.
About a thousand charters were
recently declared forfeited.
Tuk German Emperor it is said
wants to visit tfee United States,
bat cannot because the naughty
Uichstag wont vote 45,000 marks
to build him a special boat to ride
over here in.
At ilopkinsville, Ky., recently
the insenced people took the
murderer of their town marshal
from the jail and formed a lynch
ing party that successful orna
mented a limb of a tree with his
mortal remains.
The anti-slaver conference as
sembled in Brussels, have sent to
Stanley and Emin Pasha, for a
narrative of thiir experience on
the slave trade matter in the
African interior, and will remain
in session until they hear from
them if possible.
Thk averaging up qualities of
the Drexel young ladies is very
good. Onu goes into the Catholic
church and gives all her millions
to that institution, while another
endows a poor but worthy young
man with her money. Taking
them together they average well.
Do.m Pedro, the deposed Bra.il
lian monarch, Beenis to hare
rather astonished hi3 relatives ami
people in Portugal by assuring
' them that he was an American
and a republican, lie evidently
was fully prepared for and cogniz
ant of the proposed action of the
revolutionists.
As Illinois farmer recently had
a tussle with the representative
bird of our great Republic. The
great American eagle, that under
took to muckle him, measured over
eiz feet across the wings, and gave
the man some fearful scratches
before he was dispatched by the
man seizing his feet and putting
his boot on his head.
New South Wales has one of its
periodic gold rushes. This time
the new digging are at Peak Hill
and the reports of extraordinarily
rich finds brought about 2000 min
ers to the place in a week, while
the latest reports say several hun
dred were coming in every day.
One queer feature of the camp is
that the lead in every case giyes
out at the depth of about seventy
feet, and another is that the work
hs been stopped until the colonial
Parliament can decide on the size
of a claim which a prospector may
take up. Fancy a crowd of eager
American miners waiting idly for
weeks to learn the result of such a
decision.
Cardinal Lavigerie's appeal to
America for aid in suppressing the
African slave trade should not go
unheeded. A congress is soon to
meet in Brussels to consider some
pla i of international action. The
cardinal thinks that it would be
poetic justice for the emancipated
' blacks of the United States to Eend
delegates to this congress and
asidt in its work. This is a very
pertinent suggestion, which ouht
to meet witii a f.iv.raUo response.
This movement is confined to no
race or creed, and it deserves the
encouragement and assistance of
all Christendom. The Arabs are
desolating the Dark Continent,
Their atrocities are greater, if
possible, than ever before known
in the fearful history of the slave
traflic. The cardinal, who is
especially well informed on this
matter, declares that never since
the days of Livingstone has tke
slave-trade been so active' and
wide-spread as at this moment.
The reports of its suppression at
Zanzibar, he declares, are false,
and he accuses the Sultan of that
country of being in league with the
slave-dealers. It is a reproach on
the civilization of the age that the
Arabs should be allowed to con- j
tinue this traffic in human flesh.
Where one captive lives to reach
the coast ten die on the way, while
the o'.d men and women and young
children are mercilessly kille 1 at
the start. Village after village is
decimated by onu of thene- Arab
caravans. The cardinal tays that
an expenditure of $4,C30,0O would
accomplish the purpose of break
ing up the traflic. If this is true
there should !e no d'Ticulty in ac
complishing that very desirable
