Hot t see our stores and ranges
bafore buying is a mistake. Mis
takes are always costly. In heat
ing stores we have the largest as
well as the most carefully selected
stock in the city. The stoves we
offer were not bought as aa experi
ment but as a certainty. We
know what each stove will do, and
they were bought for cash, so the
price is right. We have special
ties in heaters, beside our regular
lines of Garland, Argand and Su
perior stoves and ranges.

Hill, ins Train Wrrcker, His thr Effitatiry
t Ask fir Pardon.
It is learned that a petition is
being circulated for the pardon of
young Hill, recently sentenced to
the penitentiary from this county
for a term of sen years for man
slaughter, for turning the Lebanon
switch of the Southern 1'acific rail
road, with the circumstances of
which the readers of the Hkkam
are perfectly familiar. The argu
ment used for the securing of
names to the petition is that the
man is innocent, that the innocent
party was convicted and that, for
lack of evidence, the two guilty
young men were acquitted. This
seems, under the lircumstanees, a
very ilimsy reason foi asking such
pardon. Had Hill when he took
the stand in his own defense u.ade
a full confession as he did before
the trial, giving the exact facts as
thev occurred from bediming to
i enu, mere woum not oesomucu
III ...I I .X l
eurontery in his as-king lor pardon
now. But ho did not do that; but
on the contrary again and again
denied all knowledge of the- affair,
swearing positiuely that ne..Lui i.o
nor the Kolfe brothers touched the
switch in any way, and now that
1 he has been convicted and lrom
' want of evidence or bv the court
ruling out evidence that wojld
have convicted the other two par
ties, they are given their liberty,
an attempt of 'squealing" is re
sorted to in order to effect his par-
uton. ihough tie mav not nave
committed the offense alone, he
was present when it was done and
confessed before ihe trial to having
1 aided in the crime. He did not in
any way attempt to stop the train
and thus prevent the fatal disaster,
1 and lastly refused to tell what he
knew, and the verdict of the people
in general is that he should sutler
the consequences. The fact that
two of the three guilty parties ko
free should not produce- sympathy
for the third to ask for his pardon.

A PuPULAR ESTABLISHMENT.
How Jtiiius Gradwohfs OoldenlRnle Baaaar
Meets the Poblio Want.
One of the most extensive and
elegantly stocked establishments
in the Willamette valley is to be
found in the Golden Rule Bazaar
store of Julius Gradwohl in this
city. In order to accommodate his
many customers he is in the field
early this yea-, and has already
commenced receiving his immense
line of beautiful goods for the fall
and winter and for the holidays,
and has one of the most gorgeous
and dazzling displays to be seen in
any Golden Rule Bazaar in Oregon.
The line carried comprises a be
wildering assortment of fine china,
queensware and glassware of the
latest styles and most delicate de
signs. The beautiful ;hina and
glassware, together w ith the dec
orated and fancy wares, novelties,
elegant stand and hanging lamps,
toys, boys' wagons and general
bazaar goods, present a scene well
worth out 's time to visit.
Here ma be found a complete
line of table cutlery of the cele
orated makes, Roger Bros.' silver
and silver plated goods and
Bohemian wares of every variety,
while his stock of dolls, toys, toilet
and fancy goods, in plush and
silver, and novelties for the chil
dren will be larger tl,an ever be
fore. Mr. Gradwohl has enlarged
his slock in such a replete manner
that his Golden Rule Bazaar is not
only a credit to the city of Albany
but to the entire Willamette
valley, being one of the most ex
tensive establishments of the kind
in Oregon. The most important
feature to purchasers is in prices,
and when we assert that his prices
are as low as any house in the state
and that his goods are sold at
tigures that cannot be equaled in
the Northwest, it is but the recital
of an absolute fact. It will be to
the interests of the country mer
chants to purchase their holiday
goods from this establishment, and
orders should be sent in at once.
Mr. Gradwohl has long since
proven his adaptability to this
business, and it is taking no risK
to say that thisemporiuni of elegant
fane v and decoiatiye ware is the
ir.o . complete in the Willamette
llev. Those who deal at the
Golden Rule Bazaar, will find a
laije assortment to choose from,
ant a square, reliable gentleman
to deal with.
