WHO IS CO MP E VES T
WHITE A WILL?
TO
The judge of the Orphan's Court
of Allegheny, Pennsylvania, le
cently rendered a decision refusing
to allow a claim for writing a will
by a man who was not a lawyer.
He took the position that a claim
on the part of a layman for com
pensation for preparing a will
should cot he allowed, for the
reason that in a j;rcat many cases
ly ieason of the unskillful manner
in which the will was prepared
the intention of the testator was
defeated and the estate put to
large expense and costs.
In commenting upon this decis
ion, the Farmers Friend of
Mecliamifeburg,renn.ylvaiiia,eays, i
with considerable force and no
small foundation of truth: "Bah!
the records of the courts show that
the great bulk of wills that have
caused ligation have been pre
pared by lawyers. Even s-o great
a lawyer as Samuel J. Tildm
failed to write his own will so as to
keep his estate oat of the courts.
The next thing in order is for tome
judge to decide that a man t-hall
. not be allowed to writ'? his own
' will or say how his property shall
be disuosed of. Of late the rules I

that farming does pay. Here is
the way he puts the case : "Farm
ing cannot be quite so poor a busi
ness as some of our correspondents
would have us think. We hear cf
no failure in it, and we know of
many farmers who are making
money. Further than this, we
know that farmers have no diffi
culty in borrow ing money, if they
need it for improvements. TJankers
are very careful to whom they loan
their money; they do not take
many risks with it, and they are
less afraid of the farmer than most
other customers. One of our larg
est iusurancc companies that
always has a largo proportion of
its surplus funds in the hands of
fanners has this good word to say
of the class; 'They are not bor
rowing near so much money, and
what they do get is in small
amounts. They are paying the
interest on old loans promptly, and
don't have to make new loans to
pay off old ones. As it is with us,
so it is with all the other money
lenders, and this all goes to show
that times are better and the
money market easier.' "
The Chronicle says that Presi
dent Harrison has shown consider
able shrewdness in deciding not to
put ins message into type, om, 10,
have it copied on the typewriter, j
Heretofore there has generally ;
been trouble a1 o it the premature
puolicatioaofthamesg ', and it !
has been found impossible to fix
the rcponsioilit'. Now Elijah
HJ.orJ and hi assistant will 1 o !

tions that a barrel of American
flour would once buy at Rio a bag
of coffee weighing 30 pounds mor
than the present ones, whereas it
now takes five barrels of fiour to
make the barter. Nineteen staples
of trade have gone down in price,
while coffee has more than
doubled. People now want to
make in five years wiiat would
once have been considered the
work of forty year?, omv do it,
but the great . majority become
bankrupt. The commission house?
make profits out of tin- f pecula

prosperity of the country. It is
neither more nor less than gamb

an average crop of 5,000,000 bags.
IlrsRANDMAX says that it is just
a little startling the thought that
all the gold brought out of this
continent in the Lift fifty years,
has not been suflicient to pay for
the sugar produced by other coun
tries, brought through our custom
houses and con.Mimed in that time
by the people of these or this
United States.
New York, ctv with character
istic liberality has laid its heavy
hand upon the po r organ flind

of grinding out the only muvc the
poor tenement dwellers have the
delight of listening to. The organ
grinders are holding mass meetings
to regain their rights.

most deeply to be deplored ; the
