canal has been formally com

the question ia often asked as to
how long it will take to finish the

but Chief Engineer Menocal lias
estimated that six years will be
ample, which would placs the
opening of the canal in June, 1895.
Still it is well to allow fcr contin

much out of the way, tiie first
steamer may go through the canal
in the year 1890, or seven years
from the present time.
