Two ibiugs have occurred re-1
cently that have iet our Canadian
cousins to thinking. One is the
exchuiou of Canada from partici
pation in the Tan-American con
ference, aud the other is the sealing
dillicultiea in Bearing Sea, It is
not necessary to develop the rea
sons that guided this government
in neglecting to invite Canada to
take part in the international con
ference. The fact that the domin
ion is a dependency, and that, too,
of a Kuropean nation, bars it from
a conference of independent Ameri
can nations.
The Pan-American
congress has tended to impress,
more forcibly than ever before.

that the home government would
promptly and emphatically back
them up. Great I'ritain has not

tho republicans gain eight senators
from the new states, giving a
healthy anti-free trade majority of
ten in tho United .States senate.
Looking at tiie practical gains of
the late elections, republicans have
no reason to be dissatisfied with
the results so far as national politics
are concerned
I Ax important question is likely
to arise concerning the terms of
Washington's senators. By the
classification of congress they will
have to be arranged so that the
term of one will expire in 1891 and
the other in 1 Sir,. Had Washing

third of the new states admitted to
the Union, her senators would
have held oflice until 18!t:5 and

Tin: earnings of the Southern
Pacific Company for the first, six
months this year resulted, it is
said, in a deficit of pearly f l,3tW.O0O.
Up to October, however, the com
pany succeeded not only in wiping
out the $l,"iii0,000 deficit, but
started last quarter with a surplus
of t-0.00n. The total earnings for
the third quarter of the current
year were $l,i"2J.:J20.
Tin: Albany Hoard ci Trade

factor in the growth of the city. In

of trade should not remain in
