The meeting of the Pan-American
cougress has aroused a great
interest in this country over our
neighboring republics to the south.
The Albany Jowrnal says that the
geography of South and Central
America is not well known to
students of thia generation. In
telligent people are often surprised
to learu that the area of Brazil and
that of the United States are about
the same, and that the Argentine
Republic alone is about the size of
this country east of this country
east of the Mississippi, and if Mas
sachusetts extended westward a
hundred mile? w ide to Oregon it
would be the size and shape of
Chili. The centuries of Spanish
colonization did little to extend a
knowledge cf the resources of South
America, or to develop them, and
it is within the memory of people
now living that patriotism south of
the equator has had a birth in his
tory. Recently the tide of Eu
ropean immigration, encouraged
by a per caput subsidy to fiteam
ship lines of $25 for each emigrant,
has been increasing rapidly in
nearly all the states, and with this
increase in population there has
been corresponding increase in
wealth, resources, and internal and
foreign commerce. In tnis connec
tion it is not to be lost sight of that
the inducements and bounty
tempting the omigrant and put
forth by government authority
have bee:i with the understanding
that by should be tome a produce.',

classes in the maiu, been

least those invol ced iu carrying on 1
difficult trains o: thought, are not j
at their strength until this ae.
This fact is of value to all teachers.
It shows that educational forcing
does not accomplish good. Steady
development is tbe only true policy
of the clas-room.
The Chronicle goes after the put
up races and matches by saying
that 'it looks as though most ofj
the sc called sporting events that
have occurred recently have been
what are known as "fakes."
Oarsman Ilamm tells a clear story
of the way the Mclveesport race
between Teemer and Gaudaur was
arranged to beat the backers of
Teemer. It has been proved that
three out of four cf the slogging
matches in this city on which a
large amount of money was wager
ed were hippodromes of the worst
kind. It is about time that the
sensible public quit putting up any
money on o if2Sts which are all
decided before an oar is dipped
into the water or a blow struck."
And still probably the "sensible"
public will continue to run after
these fakes in the future as in the
past. What the Chronicle says of
its locality applies with equal force
here. Nine tenths of the so-called
races and matches are but games
to catch the money cf unsuspect
ing grecnies.
The compliment piEEel upon
this country by the Kussian ambas
sador to the German court at
Perlin, at the recent dinner given
to our minister, Mr. Phelps, was
happily expre-sed and applicable.

How will that view of the ease feet

England farm desertions are tak

intelligence to hear from a cor
respondent in Kent that 'the num

country this Michaelmas is 'largei
than has ever been known.' Kent,
the h-adquarters of the hop-growers
of thi3 country, has often been
called 'tha Garden of England;'
and it would indeed be diilicult to
find any other country south of the
Tweed which is so thoroughly cul
tivated, or where rents have been
so high all round a3 in this part of
England. The terrible competi
tion to which Free-Trade has sub
jected British agriculturists and
market gardeners has for son.e
jvars past rendered their business
one of increasing precariousness
and anxiety, and it is only by the
most strenuous exertions, and by
availing themselves of all the re
sources of modern science and
machinery, as applied to the culti
vation of the land, that they can
hope to hold ttieir ovn. The
capital of farmers is but limited,
and if, under the growing competi
tion they have to contend against,
they arc ;ompelled year after year
to lo-e capital, the time inevitably
comes when they must either
abandon their farms or get them
at lower rents. The farmer, it may
