The niatler of easy and safe
iii cans of transit in the country is
one of paramount importance. It
ia a matter that is attracting more
and more attention. An eastern
exchange says that college profes
sors, civil engineers and magazine
writers are directing public atten
tion to the subject of country high
ways, and the Vanderbilt Univer
sity, Tennessee, has gone to far as
to provide for the free instruction
in road engineering of one person
from each county in that state.
I he t.uti:njre sun, which is agi
tating the question in Maryland,
' points out that the power required
to draw a wagon weighing, with its
load, one ton on a level macada
mized road of broken stone is 05
pounds, which is increased to 200
pounds on a common dirt road.
Professor Ely, of Johns Hopkins
I'niversity, estimates that poor
loads cost the farmer, on an aver
age, $13 per horse; and Piofessor
Jenks, of Knox College. Illinois,
argues that with good permanent
roads freight could often be hauled
ten miles on wagons cheaper than
it could be taken one mile on a dirt
road to a railroad station, unloaded,
put on the cars, freight paid, un
loaded from, the cars, and carried
to its destination. Of the social
influences of good roads ho says
that "a large part of tho mental
inspiration of the farmers depends
on their ability to atiend church,
lecture., concerts, ami social trath
erings at a distance; and :ea!ly
good roads, by enabling them to go
m ucii more easily, would doubtless
raise the ul.o.'u intellectual tone of
the farming community, beside,
keeping within the healthful in
fluence of ti.e i.trm many who are
now forced into the towns.1'

fciucu Uiinng nit; con vi-ihiou ui uiv-
Lroadway labernade. it was a
cold and hluster;ng day, and the
Solons of the church, as well as the
directors of the missionary societies
who disburse large sums of money
in various quarters of the earth,
had been in council all the after
noon. A3 they filed out in the
street they were a snu and healthy
looking lot of men. Crouching
along by the railing which sur
rounds the church, where the
crowds of clergymen . were almost
obliged to brush against her to
pass by, was a woman, of jicrhaps
thirty years, nursing an infant at
her breast. She had scarcely
enough clothes on for decency's
sake, and her face was pinched
with hungry and privation. The
child looked sickly. The wind
blew her ecant drapery around her,
and '..er shawl was wound around
the child to keep it warm. The
clergymen passed her by to a man ;
not one stopped to say a word nor
to bestow a penny upon the unfor
tunate voman, and long after the
church was locked she continued
to sit there, until the police sent
heron.
The aphorism enunciated by
L'ncle Jerry Rusk, the Secretary of
Agrieultura, in his first report is
worttiy of a plaea among hif
toric saying3 of statesmen. He
