THE TIN PLATE HUSIA'ESS.
Just at the present time efforts
are being made in this country to
develop tin mines, and break up
the iowerful "trust" which controls
the output of all the tin-plate
manufactures in the world, about
half of which is used in this coun
try. The American Economist
on this subject says that simultan
eously free-trade advocates on both
sides of the Atlantic are vigorously
insisting that no encouragement to i
that end shall be extended by con-j
cress. While mere are two tones
to the voices thus directed toward
Washington, somewhat
discordant :
when brought together, they will I
be found quite in harmony as to
the end desired. Here the plea is j
that the price of tin will be in
-
creased, as witness every writer
and speaker heard in behalf of free
tin, In Great Britain the fear is
that monopoly will be destroyed,
as witness the prophecv of a lead-
ing trade journal 0f What w ill fol- '
low if Americans are permitted to
make tin-plates. The Ironmonger
, . , . , ( i
warmingly asserts that "sooner or
later the tin plate trade will cease ,
to be the monopoly of South U ales
and Monmouthshire" if competi-
tion in America is' permitted.
Further on, speaking of efforts to
discourage the threatened competi
tion, the sa me journal thus appre
ciating! y refers to the work of the
tariff reformers here, and the prob
able outcome of their joint efforts :
"The Welsh makers have stiong
allies in tin? United States, ami it"
the alliance is made the most of we
should have very considerable
doubts of the success of any appli
cation to c(i'res to increase the
present diP.ifS. But to insure that
tesulttlu1 Wel.-h makers and their
business connections must not
only watch but work, and work
hard, to checkmate the advauc of
the American protectionists."
There is doubtless some satisfac
for "reform" workers intheknoivl
edge that their efforts are appre
ciated by those foreign allies with
whom they may have
'bnsinPSS !
Connections, While permitted to :
extract so little comfort from popu
lar expressions nearer home.
The annexation f Canada to the
Union continues to be a theme of
comment. The Chronicle eays
that the Dominion government is
becoming alarmed a? the agitation
in Canada in favor of closer trade
relations with the United States,
I. .
in some quarters, in favor of j
political union. It has been the
policy of the official organs of the j
Canadian government until very
recently to ridicule the idea of there
being any Canadian sentiment in
favor of annexation, but the feel
ing ha3 become so strong that they
can no longer ignore it, and fo
have undertaken to combat it.
They may argue as much as they
please, but when the time comes
that the Canadians fully realize
iheir own best interests annexation
to the United States will speedily
and surely follow.
Ir there i3 any particular point
in the publicity and talk in the
telegraphic dispatches, over the
marriage of Maurice Dupont, the
'22 year old millionaire of Willimg
ton, Deleware, with Dottie Eitz
gerald, a lovely Irish barmaid at
Queenstown, Ireland, it is to the
credit of the young man in con
tracting an honorable marriage,
instead of attempting to establish
a disreputable liaton, as most rich
men's sons seem to ailed, ending
in the ruin of the laity, it is c r- j
tain'.y a matter of congiatnlatioii ;
that this rich young gentleman has :
acted h.norably at least. j
A C hicago suicider wa3 endowed ;

- j
Tick election reports indicate
! that, as usual in the oil" years, the
j gains are on the democratic side of
lleved him of the poison
o j the house, in -New l orK anu umo
the prohibition movement seems
! to have augmented the same side,
! and to have drawn from the reput-
! licnnK a condition that can be i
looked for when any appreciable
growth is shown in the third party.
The Alta grows facetious over
the census matter and says that
Mr. I'orter desires to enrich the
next census wth the sumptuous
statistics of religion. That is good,
but fat is not wholesome without
lean. Let us have, also, the statit-
tics of that poor man's blister, the J
: groat American lartu mortgage.
Tin: practice of gentlemen taking
hold of a ladv's arm while walking
with her has been suddenly broken i
up in New York by the small boy i
universally crying out, "He's ar- j
restin' her for pickin' his pocket." :
