DUO l' USELESS MATTER.
In the arrangements of the curri
culum of schools at the present
time, the tendency happily for
the rising generation is towards
dropping the old, useless methods
and adopting new and practical
ideas. For years the discussion
ha3 been carried on as to the use
fulness of the study of the dead
languages in our schools, and sure
ly if slowly the opinion is fast
gaining ground tha it is a useless
expenditure of time. Trofessional
men are fast arriving at the opinion
and demanding that their children
be not burdened with the expendi
ture of time and money as they
were in this useless drill. Felix
L. Oswald, M. V., in the Septem
ber number of the Popular Science
Monthly, makes a plea for this.
He says: Not one of a hundred
non-philological students (gradu
ates devoting themselves to the
special study and the teaching of
ancient languages) would ever
of continuing his antiquarian pur
suits or be able to look upon a
Greek or Latin text-book, without
a shudder of di sgust. It has been
conclusively proved that all the
etymological benefits derived from
linguistic graveyards could be
reaped in a single year by the
study of root -words (most of them j
familiarized bv their English and
French derivatives). It has licen i A t.

Weather prophets have been
abroad in Oregon this fall predict
ing all kind3 of things regarding a
hard winter. The dispatches from
the East indicate that winter is
commencing there earlier than
usual. In Colorado a snowstorm
hasi been raging forty-eight hours.
The storm was the worst tdiat has
been experienced for several years.
All trains were delayed, and tele
graphic communication with all
eastern points destroyed. Three
hundred miles east over fifteen
miles of telegraph line has teen
completely wrecked, while the
damage to fruit and shade trees is
considerable. Reports from the
south say the storm has driven
thousands of cattle and horeess off
iheir range into the southeast, and
that hundreds of the weak animals
animals have perished in the bliz
zards. A fall ot" about six inches
of snow was reported at the Union
Pacific headquarters from several
towns ir. Western Nebraska, while
in Wyoming a blizzard is prevail
ing, and it is loared that the trains
will be bio.-ka led. The telegraph
wires on the Rurlington are broken
at several points v.Vrt oi Omaha.
