EDITOIUA L NOTES.
Tjik press of San Francisco is en
gaged in pointing out an alarming
Condition that is developing among
the Chinese of that city. The
Chronicle says : As is well known,
there have been numerous attempts
of late to land Chinese women from
incoming steamers on the plea that
they were Chinese merchants'
wives. The simple truth is that in
ninety-nine cases out of every hun
dred the women who claims to be
a wife is only a slave, a human
chattel, and that she is brought to
this city not to fill the honored
position of a wife, but to pander to
the lust of man and to spend her
life in a brothel. She is not to
blame, as her wishes were not con-1
suited m the matter. Her parents j
or guardians sold her, and she be- j
came as much the slave of her
buyer as did ever an African in the
days of human bondage in the
Fnited States.
Ji sr now mines and the mining
business is of paramount interest,
as on this coast active work in that
direction is the order of the day.
From a mining journal we glean !
the following particulars of a mine !
in Queensland, Australia, the
f-, i
Mount Morgan, the gieatest gold
mine in the world, will be of inter-!
est. The balance-sheet for thu:
half-year just ended shows that;
the receipts for the six months:
were i3,7oS,J7o, including about !
75.000 carried forward from th !
previous half-year's operations.
Out of this. 2.S73.000 have been .
distributed in dividends, and about ,
the same amount has been carried
forward as was brought into the
account. The dividends declared
lor the first nino months of th
present year amount on an average
to $.VW,0()i) a month, or $4,50!VU
The :ivirag3 production of gold is
over 1,000 ounces per day.

tones and published them under j
the name of A Treatise on the
Law of Divorce." It is a queer as
sortment. Causes fcr divorce
range from almost nothing in one ;
ttatc to the grayest crimes in an
other. In Washington territory,
Connecticut, Utah and Kentucky
the grounds for divorce are almost
left to the discretion of the judge,
while in South Carolina no divorce
is granted at all on any ground.
From this book a sufferer can find
out on what plea he may get a
divorce in the state in which he
lives or elsewhere. Mr. Parlelt
Lloyd thinks the strange jumble of
laws shows the utter futility of at
tempting to pass a general United
States divorce law.
The attack upon Minister Mis
ner, our representative to the
Central American states, by the
Mexican government, appears to
have been the result of jealcusy.
The Chronicle says that Misner is
the first accomplished man we
have sent to the Central American
states in many years, and the old
fossils whom he displaced natural
ly feel aggrieved and probably
egged on the jealousy that resulted
in tho Mexican protest. The pro
test is in exceptionally bad taste
just at this time, when the United :
States is doing all in its power to !
foster closer relations with all the !
Spanish-American republics.
The i'uur.U'ieri.-?tic-3 of tiic
Ciiinej? i.eople an as glaring as
they are revolting. One of them
the Chroniid hints at in saying
that we in:i exjv:t to hearanotLu-r

valley, where the cotton crop is a
failure. The calmness with which
the Chinese government allows its
subjects to starve 13 appalling to
foreigners, but the help that Eng
lish and Americans gave ir the
famine last winter and spring in
North China was trifling compared
to the grand total of misery. At
the very time thousands of Chinese
were actually starving in the north
ern proviuces cargoes of wheat
and millet were exported from the
southern part of the same districts.
The Roman empire in its worst
days nevr evinced more callous
contempt for human life than
China shows to-day.
A. ee pout from Kentucky relates
the fatal results of a duel between
an ox and i mare which resulted
in the death of both. The mare
used her heals and teeth and the
ox wielded his horns. All efforts
to part the combatants were futile
until the ox finally gored the mare
in the neck, breaking oil a horn. !
The mare dropped dead and the j
ox, recking with blocd, fell over, j

Tin- I'rotii-li iMvttrnment has
commenced iiroceediii"s at this late 1
date, to investigate the work upon
the Panama canal. The satisfac
tion gained by the investigation
will not be very quieting to the
national nerves of that highly ex
citable people.
Of r country is to have quite a
rest. It is said that Mrs. Langtry
has engagements that will keep
her in England for at least a year.
What poor Freddie Gebhardt will
do in the interim is not intimated
however. Get him over to JEng
land probably.
The smuggling of opium into
the United States is being carried
on quite xtensively from Canada
&.-ross the Saulte Ste Marie river
jnto Michigan. The Canadian
pacjfic railroad forms the connett-
ing link to carry on the business.
The new railroad deal between
the Union Pacific and the North
western, we are informed, will be
of benefit rather than a detriment
to the Oregon Pacific, in its con
struction eastward.
The senatorial fight in the new
state of Washington is waxing hot.
The principal fight is between
(Jen. Snrasuc and Hon. Walter J.
Thompson, two Tacoma candidates. !
