The decision of the Catholic

the young lady, MissThresa Kelly,
a devout member of the church
who had partaken of the sacrament
on Sunday preceding her death,
that her body could not bo interred
in the Catholic cemetery of Cavalry
church, New York, because she
admired and had attended Dr.
McGlynn's meetings, will be taken
as extremely bigoted in its nar

EDITORIAL NOTES.
The Sunday Oregonian makes
mention of an interesting case.grow
ing out of a charivari, which has
recently been decided by a Wiscon
sin circuit court. It was held that
a charivari is the same as a riot,
and the defendants, eight young
men, were found guilty by the jury
and sentenced as the law provides.
This following a recent decision by
the Iowa supreme court, exonerat
ing a man who had shot and killed
another, on the ground that the
dead man was in the act of per
secuting the defendant by leading
a charivari party against his house
and therefore deserved the fate
that he met, will tend, it is hoped,
to discourage a ''sport, " so-called,
that had its origin in the rude and
vulgar familiarities of the border,
ami that should never have been
permitted to survive them. ,Vhy
so coarse a practice has been al
lowed to linger so long about the
neartu-stone ot civilization is a
mystery. The estimate in which
such a procedure is held by society
is illustrated in the sharp censure
that has fallen in soino quarters
upon Herndon's '"Life of Lincoln,"
wherein the president is shown to
have been in his youth and early
manhood a participator in this and i
other rowdyisms, that contrasted
painfully with the refinements and
responsibilities that environed 1 is
later years. This is proof, not that
the biographer is a coarse and
boorish man, as has been freely

The contrast between our own
f tir country, and the cut up nation
alities of the continent on the other
side of the Atlantic pond, is best
illustrated by a comparison be
tween treatment of the delegates
to the Ail-American conference,
and the traveling scions of noiility
across the pond. No one thought
of any military escort, nor even a
police surveillance, of our visitors
for their safety. It was not neces
sary. But in any European coun
try, if any one of the royal family
takes a trip a force of soldiers or
police, must give safety by their
active vigilant presence. The fact
certainly speaks volumes for the
freedom of our country.
