of would be reformers, who think
that they can better tne workings
of human affairs to a n onderful
degree, and even aspire to change
the fundamental laws of nature.
One of these cranky individuals
recently indited the following:
"What a wanton cruelty it is to
bring into the world little souls
that should be saved, to expose
them to nothing but the buffets
and misfortunes of the world that
has sympathy only for the rich and
''well-to-do." as the phrase goes.
No money to educate thern, a
chance of coliego forever in the !
background.''
To this the Farmer's Friend
makes the following truthful ob
servation "that quotation is from
the pen of one of those superior
being3 who imagine that they are
fully competent to point out and
correct the mistakes made by the
Creator of the universe. The doc
trine enunciated is as pernicious as
it is silly. Had it been carried
out years ago the sountry would
have been deprived of the valuable
service of Lincoln, (ireeley, Grant,
Sheridan, Garfield and a host of
others whose names brighten the

The increased interest in the
study of electricity, which has
manifested itself in the large in
crease in the number of students in
this branch at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, is felt also
at other institutions of leaning. At
Princeton College a new building
has been erected for the use of the
students and instructors in electri

for occupancy. Electrical engeneer
ing is to receive hereafter special
attention at Columbia College. A
new building is in process of erec
tion for the use ot this department.
It is of three stories and will be
supplied with engines and boilers
of approved construction.

plan of run-
Tm: general opinion has always
prevailed that it was a bad idea to
partake of food just before retiring,
but that belief is fast becoming
obsolete. It is now being recom
mended instead of conelemned, and
some go even so far as to commend
it as a cure for insomnia. In a
communication to the American
Medical Journal, Dr. Eggleeton
says he instructs all such patients
to eat before going to bed, provided
all work has been laid aside at
least an hour before taking the
nocturnal repast. There is a popu
lar superstition that grown people
should not eat before going to
sleep. Hut Dr. Kggleston forcibly
asks why adults should be so very
different in this respect from
babies. During sleep digestion
proceeds slowly, but this is no
valid reason why food should not
be taken shortly before retiring.
But the food should be simple and
should not be taken in the sleeping
apartment.

depth of 40.2SG feet, or S'V miles,
exceeding by more than 17,000
