giand jury this morning. When
he come out he was released. In

lowing him Henry J. Miccalle,
another clerk in Sullivan's office,
was taken before the grand jury.
When he came out he said he had
revealed nothing because he had
nothing to reveal. It is predicted
that there will be sensational de

Fiasco of Stevana' Bicyclo Trip to

Stevens, the bicyclist, who, after
making a tour of the world ou his
wheel, was sent to Africa to "dis
cover Stanley," has returned here
aud has failed to find any trace what
ever of Stanley. His misson it a
complete fiasco.
A man who was employed by the
Church Missiou Society, who left the
southern end of Lake Victoria Nyanza
on March 30th, has arrived here, and
is positive that Stanlev has not been
anvwhere in that riuarter. The
church mission believe this man's in
formation is completely trustworthy
The impression here is that Stanley
feels that he his done enough for
glory and that this time he proposes
to avail himself of the large boodle at
ivory that exists in Centra' Africa.
When he does co.ue he will appear

A Thriving Profession Folloned ly
Many Families.
1'eguary throughout the East is a
thriving profession, says a writer in
Good Words. There are guilds of
beggars, besides the numerous com
munities of dervishes, who are semi
relieious mendicants. Many families
have been beggars for generations,
aud are nn iiilicants from choice.
Some of these jroicFtioual beggars
are actually vea'thy. Four and
twenty years aoo tl e writer well re
members a ease. The Chief Beggar
(the title was not conferred iu
derision) yavc his daughter in mar
riage to a substantial fanner. The
irls dowry consisted of two free
hold houses, the rootiu of which were
entirely filled with dry pieces of
bread, and the sale of these begged
crusts subsequently realized a con
siderable sum, being disposed of as
food for cattle. It must be remem
bered that in the East there is no
organized charity,and that most Mus
sulmans are exceedingly charitable,
many giving away a fifth and some
a third af their income. Under such
circumstances it is not to be won

involved the question of proat in
tbe scbool indemnity selections in
Oregon .
Oregon was granted every six
teenth and thirty- sixth section of
land for school purposes. The law
also provided that, in case any of
these lands Lad been entered under
the public land laws prior to the
date of the grant, the state should
be entitled to indemnity therefor
and migDt make indemnity selec
tions from any unoccupied public
lands. In pursuance ot this
authority the state, it appears,
selected in the aggregate a large
tract of land upon which expired
pre-emption filings were on record.
The question at issue wss whether
tbe burden of the proof of tbe fact
that tbe filings had expired rested
with the state or with the parties
who made tli2 fiiiugs. The assi-t-act
commissioner holds in favei of
the state, and has directed that iu
all such cases the pre-cmptar shall
be required to appesr before the
lacal land ofiice within twenty daya
after receipt of the notice and
show cause why the entry has not
been canceled, thus throwing Ine
burden of proof upon the cntrj
mau. It is said that tlieie are a large
number of cases in tbe general
land office which will be disposed
tf thus.

Pauncefote, the British minister, said
this evening that he expected within
two or three weeks to call upon
