Fifty years ago most of the people
of the United .Slates were clothed
from the products of the domestic

itinerant shoemaker went from house
i t house, setting up his bench and

Kitchens. There were no planii'g-
mills, no shops for the manufacture of
doors, , sashes and blinds. All the
work of tho builuer, including carpen
ters and joiners work, was done by
hand. The carpenter, if a good one,
got a dollar a day. Coal was con
sumed by but few families, even iu
the large cities, and by nobody in the
smaller towns. The tailors, like the
shoemaLers, came to the 1 -ase ani
made into clothing the cloth woven
by the mother and daughters, with a
little help from the fullingmill that
was generally near the gristmill of the
neighborhood, The railroad and the
telegraph had not yet added their
powers to the forces of civilization.

lived under the new conditions than
any nomber of years of the hard exist
ence that was drudged out under the

lessly pessimistic soul, the constitu
tional and r.nu-.-able grumbler, who
does not recognize the blessings t aat
have come with the march of inven
tion. For all those, let it be bo; ne
in mind, we are indebted to the sys
tem that has fostered invention aud
secured io inventors the right to enjoy
the products or their own braiua and
hands.
