Orators and writers without
mini lit-r tell us that the rich are
growing richer and the poor poorer,
and that the country is going to
destruction unless a change is
made. io also in the moral field
the sins of the people aie multi
plying and wickedness prevail?.
Are these statements the facts in
i he case? The Philadelphia In
quirer says upon this subject that
we are threatened by the pessimis
tic philosophers with a social cata
clysm of the first magnitude in the
near future. We are told that "the
people" will stand "this sort of
things" no longer and will rise in
revolution against "'the encroach
ments of plutocracy.' This sounds
well. In fact, the English lan
guage is peculiarly rich in words
that roll easily from the tongue of
the prophet of evil. The pessimist
moreover, always deals in the
speculative degree, and bis lan
guage is striking even if his pro
phecies never come true. But
what are the facts? Is social dis
content wide-spread and is there
any cause for it ? Are the distur
bances that occasionally take
place throughout the country mere
ly the result of local causes or are
they ou 'cropping of this revolt
rhicb we are so freely promised

desirable conditions into existence,
very pertinently savs: "The gen
eral demand by the masses for the
widening of legislative functions
arises from a vague idea that, by
some additional enactment1, pro
duction would be more equally dis
tributed. Fcr this reason an effort
is made to corre.:t every petty
grievance by additional lawmak
ing. Prosoeritv is to be gained,
they think, by some legal panacea !
instead of by the natur.il road of!
economy ami industry, and the j
present time is prolific of these so
called political economists who
advocate new and unique additions
to our already cmiii eisutue code. !
They will bear watching and their
doctrines require careful sifting
before you tie to their ne v-fangled
theories." The truth of these
words cannot be gain-aid. and
they should bear ihnr full weight
of consideration from every think- J
ing person in the country.
