Faroera Timber Land.
The upper .Santiam country, in
Linn and Marion counties is" put
ting on considerable airs nowa
days, the march ot progress having
metamorphosed it from the near
approach to a "howliDg wilder
ness" a couple of years ago, to a
region of prosperous farms and
thriving little towns all along the
line. This has been largely the
result of the building of the Oregon
demand and an outlet fr the tim-1

ville is a railroad station with a
daily train, arri,ing there from
Albany at noon and returning at 1
o'clock. Here are two hotels, one
of which is run by Mrs. Gates ami
does a good business. Here is to
be found that popular and re.mble
pioneer, Don A. Smith, who, with
his partner Prof. T. .1. McCIary,
well known as an educator ami
business man of ability, has
just
built a line new store building and
is now spreading uoon its shelves
an $S00O stock of general merchan-;
disc, embracing everything needed
in any community, and the people
of the surrounding country are
ty afforded to trade at home with 1

The next town this way is Mill i Sunday, the day fixed for the
City, at the railroad crossing of the j tournament on the East Portland
Santiam, where one of the best i ball grounds. Those coming from
equipped sawmills m the state is a distance, California, Montana,
kept working to its full capacity all etc., are not expected to arrive be
the time with large orders con-1 fore the latter part of the week,
stantly ahead. The company own-j Messrs. Cook and Nowell, of the
ing this mill have secured some , Portland live stock exchange, an
live thousand acres of the choice ; nounce that all entries for Oregon
timber land of that country, with should be made at their office, cor-
road privileges thereto and they i
certainly have a prosperous future
ahead. Quite a bustling town has
been built up around it with all
branches of business flourishing.
On the other side ot the river, !
almost opposite Mehama, is the ,
railroad station, Lvonsvillc, which j
has built up very rapidly and has
become already an important ship
ping point. j
Mehama maintains its supremacy ,
as the best hotel town on the coast, j
Mrs. Smith being still queen of
hostesses. The town will always
be a pleasant place to stop or go to
on business, its merchants iieing
wide awake and agreeable, and
carrying good stocks. The railroad
will make little, if any, difference
with them.
Stayton is building up somewhat
this year and its people feel justly
elated over their new bridge.which
israpidly neanng completion. The
false .vork was taken away from
the main span .Saturday and the
structure is f andsoine as well as
durable.
The actual settles along the
upper Santiam have bad their m
dignatijn aroused to the kicking
point by a system of timber land
.-tca'ing which has been going on
there this season. Heavy iumber
mg syndicates from Puget Sound
have been sending in "stool
pigeons" by the score, goobiing up
the best bodies of timber, so that
in another year of such work there
would not be an acre worth taking
left for the actual settler. Men
who have business interests though
there, have taken measures to put
a stop to tins ami thev should be
ably and honestly seconded by the i
officers of the government. The 1
law was made for the actual settler 1
and not that nou-resid;nt tnonopo-
lists and rich syndicates might ;
steal the public domain, but in this i
as in many other cases, the law !
this ami thev should be

THE 10LIBESS EEVITALIST ELLIS.
Ee Talk? of the Bnronrrille Eioi and
Makes a i'ool ef Himself Geieralij.
W. T. Ellis, who has gained
some notoriety at Brownsville, was
in the city yesterday. He com
plains ot the manner in w hich he
ha3 Jeen treated there. He said
he had been pelted with stones
and eggs and had his tabernacle
torn down and some of his mem
bers beaten with clubs. While at
Halsey he sail he had his wagon
torn to pieces. He says he has
sworn out warrants before Justice
Stewart, of Halsey, for the arrest
of 11. B. Keniston and two citizens
of Brownsville for participating in
the recent riot there.
It is certain that such lawlessness
of the kind recently experienced at
Brownsville should net be per
mitted. If Rev. Ellis is guilty of
what he is accused of extorting
money and slandering good men
and women, he should be arrested
and given a fair trial, and if guilty
punished or if innocent he should
t3 let alone.
Rev. Ellis said he was here to
obtain legal counsel prcparatoiy to
bringing suit against the town of
Brownsville for false imprisonment
at that place. He left the follow
ing communication at this ollice
for publication, which is not alto
gether nice for a preacher :
Bkownsvim.e, Oct. 1, ISS'.t.
We call yeur readers' attention
tc tin; article headed '"Holiness
Revivalist"' in your issue of Sep
tember Zt, which came iroiu ;
Brownsville. We wish to say that
we do not pose as a holiness re
vivalist, but rather as a scavenger
in general to clean up the damna
ble hypocrisy in such men as said
Keriston, and the physical tilth of
such placts as Brownsville, whose
streets have been lined with red
nosed bums, smoking huge Dutch
pipes, and their dirty squirting
mouths filled with smutty jokes
and the most horrid blasphemy, a
fit counterpart of hu old rotten
wood, piles of brush, old cans,
papers, and festooned everywhere
by conspicuous cow tracks, with
scraggy old cows swoopieg around
every open gate and getting their
bad manners evidently from the
said bums, or the bums from th
cows, we are unable to distinguish
which. The cows seem to be less
vicious and more intelligent as to
what they feed upon of the two.
Suffice it to say no citizens of
Brownsvi'tie had us arrested, but
said Keniston, and I have abun
dant proof of his fraudulent failure
in business, and to to-da" he has a
warrant sworn against him for
creating a riot. His marshal has
no bonds and is no officer, and his
judge is under a riot also. This is
a fine nest. We have moved our
press ard office to Brownsville and
propose to light this battle to a
grand finish.
Yours for cleanliness, law and
order and righteousness.
W. T. Ellis.
A KIUKTl.of'S 1'KOCIJEIHXG.
Last evening Rev. Ellis drew a
crowd en Fiist street by perching
himself upon a box and singing,
shouting and trying to talk. II
began by abusing the ivstanders
and canying ;.n a running badin
age with the small boys. Some
mud and wads of tobacco were
thrown at him, and the crowd
finally grew disgusted and left him
to the mercy of the small boys,
froM wbuni he soon retreated and
went to the hotel.
Rev. Ellis has the appearance of
having beMs at one time a talented
man, but ht is evidently partially
crazy now, for his actions and talk
in the street last evening was
worse than siii .
