i:i:iTISII SYNDIC A TES.
Some of the financiers of this
t ountry have been somewhat ex
ercised recently over the invest
ment of British capital in manu
factories in the I'nited States, bnt
now comes the statement that the
Britishers are actually going to try
over again what they failed to do
many years ao, to take this coun
try. This time it is with British
gold which is mightier than Eng
lish armies. The dispatches tell
us that two gigantic syndicates
with $30,0(KfL00 capital have been
ormed in Chicago and will buy up
everything in sight that will pay
twelve per cent on the investment.
This report is no. doubt exagger
ated somewhat, but it is certain
that such syndicates have been !
formed, and their scope can only
be determined after time has
elapsed to show how they are pre
pared to do business in competition
with the shrewd Yankee of this
country.
The syndicates jnclude in their
membership a great number of
British bankers and trustees of
lrge estates in the United King
dom. No business was acnuired
for them in the United States
which has not paid at least V2.i
per cent, a year for the past live
years, (irain elevators, tiouring
mills aid breweries have been the
favorite investrnen. The manage
ment of each of the various enter
prises will be placed in an Ameri
can board of directors, subject t
the control ot the board in London.
The representative of the syndi
cate when asked if this did not
look like the establishment
huge British trust, s.;id no; each
enterprise will be operated separ
ately. Th plan is not one ot ag
re.0sion, but conservative invest
ments. Hostile legislation, it is
learned, has been cleverly evaded
in a careful tnaaner. The deal
embraces a chain of elevators from
the Minnesota and Dakota wheat
districts to Chicago. The syndi
cates' flouring mills are at Minnea
polis and breweries in Chicago and
the East. The purchasing com
mittee, it is understood, left Chi
cago en route to the Northwest, and
intended to go from there to
Omaha and Kansas City, where
further purchases are now being
considered. Among the properties
already turned over to the syndi
cate are a number of breweries in
Thk Washington jorrespondent
of the St. Paul Pioneer-Press has
just returned from a trip throug
the West, chiefly in the new states.
He has been making a careful ob
servation of a flairs in the new
states, and fays that he uoes not
think the democrats have any
chance to get anything out of the
October elections except in .Mon
tana. There he thinks they will
elect the governor, and if there is
perfect harmony in the party they
will get the legislature, but he has
no doubt that the republicans will
e'.ect the representative;?.
The alleged i iot at Brownsville
over the ''holiness" revivalists
S'cms to have been somewhat ex
aggerated. The rioters did tear
down the tent b.it no property was
destroyed, no one was seriously
hurt, and no arrests were made by
the sheriff. The holiness crowd
have made . themselves very
obnoxious to the people of Linn
county gen rally, and have been
driven out of one or two places by
indignant citizens who would not
be impo.ed upon.
