Knights Templar for the jurisdiction
of the United States, will begin in

In the grand parade it is estimated

either by grand commandery or

There is evidently an immense)
boom in its incipient stages in the
tjuartzvillc mining region, which
bus been for 30 ears recognized as
containing the "richest quartz de
posits and placer diggings of any
part of the world, but which has
teen neglected through lack of
capital.
v A gentleman of this city wlio
spent all last week exploring that
country said to a Capital Journal
reporter to-lav, mat wnne ne was
prepared by previous written and
verbal information to una s'sns oi
great wealth, he was not prepared
for the marvelous revelations which
nature holds in store in those
mountains and gulches. No per
son can have a true idea of their
extent and greatness without
actual personal observation. The
old eettler is not at all surprised
because he has been there, but the
veracity of an apostle would be in
sore danger if he recited the full
facts to a comer of recent years
vnho knows nothing of the mines
personally.
Tbe present year uas seen uie
first real effort at the development
of these mines m 20 years, ana
now, our informant states, there
are several camps arduously at
work opening tunnels, sinking
shaf" and piling up ore, prepara
tory to the erection of mills as
early next j-ear as possible. The
work ot prospecting ana discovery
is going on all tke time, 25 new
claims having been filed during
the past CO days and 7 new ones
during two days of last week.
Several strong companies com
posed of capitalists of Portland,
Pendleton, Albany, Lebanon, Seat
tle, California, besides the compa
nies composed wholly or in part of
Salem capitalists, are now operat
ing there actively and will have
forces of men there all winter,
these forces to be vastly in
creased with the fr-rst working day
of spring. The (lold Mountain and
Dry Gulch consolidated gold and
silver mining company, of this
city, has secured some 200 acres of
the celebrated Pry Gulch one vast
depository of fine gold beside"

Gold Mountain.
Having secured this vast bed of
wealth, they propsse to utilize it,
and to that end they have com
menced systematic work. They
recognized the first necessity to. be
a good road from the valley, so
they purchased the old $32,000 toll
road, built over twenty years ago,
and have now a force of men at
each end working both ways, to
put it into good repair for the safe
and easy transport of their sup
plies and material. The next
desideratum -isjwater power ami
this they propose to obtain by
means of'a large Hume built from
the Middle Fork of the .antiam,
the completion of which will leave
them absolute masters of the t?it
uatioti. A sawmill will be erected
at the starting point of this flume
the first thing, to that the material
will bn produced by themselves
and rent along the structure at a
nominiil expense. This will be
followed by the erection, of other
sawmills, quailzmills and all ap
pliances for extensive quartz and
placer mining, so that before this
time next year this company alone
will have hundreds of men gather
ing the piecious metals from their
hiding places. While all this ii
going on other companies will not
be idle, hence it is easy to picture
in the mind of tbe busy Lire

coming year.
