A surveying party is engaged in
the work ot locating a raiiroa.i

on the Oregon coast has reported
that Siuslaw is deserying of im

said to have been attempted there
Sunday was not a murder. Thomas
Winning, the young Englishman
who said he was shot at twice from
ambush, evidently accidently shot
himself in the arm, which is
powder burned. There is no sec
ond wound.
Work on the permanent survey
of the Salem & Silvcrton motor
line begins to-morrow. The line
is pretty certain to bo built almost
at once.

Assassins at GervaiH.
Thomas Winning, a young Eng
lishman, 21 years of aire, lately
from California, who has been
working for F. X. Mason, about
one and one-half miles east of
IJrooks, went out hunting on Sun
day, and while returning home was
i shot bv some unknown party or
parties, who were hid in the
brush, the charge taking effect in
the right arm, making a very large
and dangerous wound. After be
ing shot ho cried for help. Then
the parties, who were about. 150
yards distant, fired again, taking
effect in the back. He was taken
to Gervais and his wounds dressed
by Dr. Stott, who pronounces them
quite critical. No reason is
assigned for the shooting.

returned from Mill City yesterday
where lie had been in the interests

Those who have been gathering
cattle in the southern part of the
county say beef is not in so good
condition as usual at this time of
the year.
The Oregon Pacific managers
propose to hare their line com
pleted in time to haul next year's
crop of wool out of this country. If
this is done it will add several
cents a pound to the price of wool
here.
The total value of property on
which taxes will be paid this year
in Crook county is f 144,89:1 less
than it was last. This decline is
principally owing to the reduction
made by the board of equalization
in the value of cattlo, horses and
Last Tuesday night J. N. Wil
liamson, who lives at Powell
Buttes, about eight miles from
town, discovered that his hay
stacks were on fire. Several men
were at his place that night, and
he aroused all hands to help fight
the Hames. They labored man
fully, but between 50 and 0 tons
of hay were burned before the fire
was put out, leaving Mr. William
son only about 13 tons of hay and
a stack of straw. The loss was
about $1000, partially covered by
insurance in the State of Salem.

While in Halsey I had the pleas
ure of attending a meeting in the
M. E. church, conducted by II . B.
KentBton. His subject was
"Devilism Exposed," in which
Mr. Keni6ton proceeded to handle
the Revs. Lambert and Ellis, the
two sanctified pieachers in a hot
handed manner. The speaker said
that Messrs. Lambert and Ellis are
the leaders of a certain class of re
vivalists who have been traveling
the country over for a number of
years, and growing fat on the hard
earned earnings of their followers.
It 6eems that Lambert, who was
the leader, would have frequent
communications from God inform
ing him that a certain brother or
sister must pav over into his hands
$300 $400 or $500 as the case might
be. He would immediately inform
the favored brother .of that fact,
and if the brother demurred he
would be threatened with dismis
sal from the band of the Chosen
Few ; that would generally bring
tiie shekels, in several case parties
mortgaging their farms to raise the
money. Keni.ston was one of the
ollowers, but at last getting his
eyes opened determined to expose
the whole thing.
Recently Ellis preached in
Brownsville, and the reverend
gentleman talked fo abusively
about the different church denom
inations that some ef the citizens
had him arrested and lodged in the
cooler for the night. There is
much feeling expressed over their
so-called religious procedure.
