DUTY OF NEWSl'AP ICRS
' Perhaps no recent action of a
tewapaper, in invading domestic
juiet and dragging personal niat
.ers before the public, bears astar
ii shed and culpable a thaso as
loes that of the New York World
n publishing the sensational ac
oaut of Dr. David Tilton P.rown's
aicide. Dr. I.rown, years ago
:&ined a national reputation as a
uccessfut superintendent of In
ane Asylums and physician in
tiai specialty. But the asylum
ver which he was placed was
proven to be nnder terrible cor
. apt management, investigation
diowing that the Dr. himself had
wcome of diseased mind, and his
-mbordinates had taken advantage
f his condition to perform their
.aharaan and sordid actions.
Or. Brown was removed and
ent to Europe and placed under
- reatment until he recovered
tnd hid (.hysicians gave
-lirectiona that he should remain
Ittiet and above all things that no
reference be nuido to his past
trouble and public life and work.
Ilia family took him to a farm near
'iataria, Illinois, where he was
.mag a retired and contented life
jatil the World scented nut his ro
reat and published a sensational
-ewme of his life and the scandals
ittached to his name and work.
..'his preyed upon Dr's. mind until
its old malady returned and ho
ook his own life. The Alta truth
a.'Iysays that Dr. David Tilton
thrown was as truly murdered by
:he New York World as though
that "enterprising" journal had,
oy the hands of its own prying cor
espondcnt, tied the knot in the
rope with which his body was found
sQ8pendcd to the rafters of the
tarn in Datavia, III. The law does J
iot and cannot punish the crime, j
out it was nevertheless murder. i
It is high time that enlightened
public upinion was awakened to
'he dangt r f iht; unbridled license
jf a sensational press. The news
paper is intended as a means for
' the dissemination of news and use
ful information, but the invasion
of domcstii' privacy for the mere
gratification, cf .ncrbi.1 or idle curi
osity is r.f ! the function of a true
.lewBpapor. Had the New York
tfTorld recognized this f;:ct Dr.
-David Tilton Drown would have

Too much cannot be said upon;
the subject oi a diversity of crops, j
An Ohio Farmer very truthfully j
says that a farmer should net de- j
pend on any one particular crop, J
but cultivate such a rotation as his
land is best adapted to, especially f
such as is wanted to be consumed j
on tho place. He should cultivate
largely such as will pay best, but
not confine his opperations entire
ly to these, for if they should fail
he has nothing to fall back on, to
subsist his family and stock. To
be self-reliant, home subsistence
should be tho first consideration;
and then such as will find the
readiest market at the highest cash
prices.
Farming is considered the most
independent occupation in the ;
world because the farmer can j
grow his own meat, bread, butter,
fruit vegetables and materials to
mako his own clothing; but if lie j
omits to do this and grow? only
one crop for market, ho is just 38 j ,J Qt
uepenueni as oiner people, anu as
likely to be imposed on by high
prices and damaged material.
Brother farmers, as all we can get
in this world is our living, while
we pass through it, let us supply
our necessities first fee 1 well our
oclves, families and all about us
then grow for sale bucu crops as
will put money in our purses.

Thk managers f the Central
Pacific railroad, it is announced
have decided not to rebuild the
burned out enow sheds along the
lino, except in the extremely deep
cuts, and to depend upon the rotary
snow plows to keep tho track clear
in the winter months. This will
be a vast improvement as far as
the pleasure of the passengers are
concerned in viewing the scenery,
and it is to be hoped that it will
eucceed.
