weeks ago the posloflice ollicials in
this city were notified that Joseph
M. West was reported lo be in .San
Francisco and that he was wanted.
No further information was given
until yesterday, when lntectors
Seybolt and Irwin arrested West at
the corner of Kearny and Sacra
mento streets on a charge of rob
bing the United States mails.
It appears .that in January, 1S8S,

During August.
San Fuaxcisco, Sept. 5. The
monthly report of the chief of
police for August shows that dur
ing that period there were 1850 ar
rests. Of these, the greatert num
ber was for drunkenness, as usual,
the total for that offense being 875.
For battery there were 105 arrests,
for burglary 45, arid for violation of
the gambling laws, 115. There
were 7 arres;s for murder and 12
for attempts to commit the crime.
Horsed t Death.
Sacramento, Sept 5. Manuel
Freitas, an employe of the Eagle
winery, met with a horrible death
by fire yesterday afternoon. He
descended into a tank which had
been coated with sulphur in order
to receive a vat of wine, when the
substance ignited, setting fire to
the man's clothing and burning
bira fearfully, He died in great
agony to-day.

Astonishing Heniriaf Erected
By a sorrowing widow. --"
Trenton Letter to the Philadelphia Times.
The stoty of the queerest tribute to
the dead on record, comes from Latn
bertville, in Hunterdon county.
Near that town lives Mrs. Elisha
Pratt, widow of Deacon Pratt, who
was famous as a farmer, a genial soul
and an ardent Methodist. He was
puticularly foud of tickling his ap
petite, aii'l was ilecme considerable
of an .picnic. His wife was an ex
cellent cook, and l:er dinner.- wt-re
rare exhibit!', m of culinary skill for a
rural neighborhood. The Heae.-u -n-joyed
nothing belter than a hoio-t iul
of clci'jnicn around a. table laden
with tempting victuals. And Mrs.
Pratt, who doted on the deacon, was
in her element when preparing such a
feast and helping entertain such
gootlly guests.
About a year ago a number of min
isters were on their way to the camp
meeting at Ocean Grove. There were
jus', a iio;:c-u ef them. Deacon Pratt
had them all stop over night at his
farmhouse, and gave them a rousing
dinner early in the t-vening. It was
a dinner modeled ou the New England
plan, as Pratt came irom Vermont
and so did his wife. There was
everything conceivable to eat and
plenty of reasonably hard cider to
drink. The deacon was in the best
of humor, and partook even more
heartily that usual of the food. Hit
wife, accustomed as she was to her
husband's large appetite, was aston
ished at the amount he consumed,
and made a mental inventory of the
Various article- and the amount of
each that he swallowed.
The next afternoon Deacou Elisha
Pratt died of cholera morbus. The
physician said the dinner knocked
him out. The funeral was the largest
the neighborhood ever knew. Eight
of the twelve clerymen present at
the dinner acted as pall-bearcrs acd
the other four officiated at the church
and by the grave.
The widow was inconsolable for a
while and talked about the tribute
she proposed having prepared in
memory of her husband. Everybody
supposed she was going to erect a
handsome monument and the makers
of tombstones sent in bids. But they
were all mistaken, Mrs. Pratt had in
view the most remarkable and yet
suggestive of memorials. She had
the work done quietly in Philadelphia
and it required some weeks to finish
it.
When it arrived at the farm and
some cf the widow's intimate friends
were invited to call and see the trib
ute, they were at first astounded and
then shocked, and finally they felt a
disposition to laugh that was con
trolled with difficulty. On the table
tiie par. or stood a large glass case.
On top of the case was a small arch,
made of solid silver. Surmounting
the arch was the figure in silver, of
in angel blowing a trumpet. Inside
the arch and suspended from it center
was a tablet of white marble, on
which were inscribe. i the following
w-ords in deep, black letters:
"This is What the Deacon Died Of."
But it was underneath tho glass
case that the great surprise awaited
spectators. There an plates arranged
in the order they were served, were
exact duplicates in wax, and some in
glace shape, of the various articles of
tood the deacon bad eaten at the die
ner the evening before be died, and
also exact duplicates in quautity and
size of the amounts be had consumed.
There was a large plate of soup, a big
slice of meat, heaping side dishes tul
of vegetables, three cucumbers, huge
slices of pie, a quarter of a water
melon, two plates 1 of ice-cream,
small cup of Coffee and three goblets
of cider. 1 hey were perfect piee
of work in wax, as well a perfect
representations of what ha -passed
down the deacon's throat at the
dinner. The whol thiui; had cost

The neit-kbors naturally ridiculed
the tribute at first, but they all re
spected the widow, and when they
found that she was really in earnest
in ber grief and in her regard for the
wax memorial, they restrained their
mirth and said little about it outside.
Many of them thought that tbe eud-
dea loss had unhinged Mrs. Pratt's
mind somewhat. This is why it is
only after ths lapse of a year that the
report of the astonishing tribute has
leaked ut.

are ushered into "The Legation"

old, faded, worn carpets.

the National Grange will meet in
Sacramento, Cal.f Nov. 13, 1S89.
