! claims that officers, and especially
non-commissioned officers, are
nedle-Bly ciuel and offensively
tyrannical ; that the food furnished
is Unfit o vat ; that vermin makes
the soldier's couch ouifit to sleep
upon ; that the recruit's money is
absorbed by the sutler, and charges
that private soldiers have been

TJIAT XBW PARTY.
Som.2 tims since a meeting was
held in Salem, and a call promul
gated for the formation of a new
political party, by the appointment
of delegates to mset in Salem on
the 14th of September 1SS9. The
call says one delegate from each
voting precienct, is to be chosen by
a union primary, and one delegate
irom each reform and labor organ
ization. The object of the meeting in
.set forth and the originators,
acting as individuals are perhaps
with the bounds of consistency and
sincere, but among the signatures
attached to the call is that of the
master of the State Grange, and
signed as '-'Master of Patrons of
Husbandry." We are informed
by Worthy Master Hayes that he
signed tne call, but "not officially
as a request of the Grange." The
signature as it stands in the call
carries the impression that it tv as
intended to carrv the influence j
of the entire grange with it, and in
that light is detrimental and con
trary to the fundamental precepts
of the order, which says that par
tisan politics is prohibited in the
grange.
We give this mention to place
fairly and squarely before our
readers not only the fact of the call
for the formation of a political
parly from the ranks of all orders,
associations and people who
honestly believe that a reform is
called for, but also to place the
matter in its right light as regards
the signature of the master of the
State grange.
Partisan political action inside
the grange is not possible, and any
one who undertakes to carry the
grange for any political party what
ever, will finu th3t ha may en'er
into a bargain but it will be utterly
impossible to deliver the goods.
As to the expediency or inex
pediency of the new party, we
do not at present anter into any
discussion, leaving that to tuch
time as it shall assume proportions
enough to command a hearing.
1 vestigation being held.

'May I sit on the fence and watch
you twirl yourseif?" This is a
concrete expression of the Eastern
opinion of what Chicago should do. J
Another humorous feature is a leaf j
from a New York school-book, j
with the country adjacent to New j
York city and state described by :
the boundary line of civilization, !
while to the east are the bean-
eaters, to the south the clay-eaters
and the lire-eaters, and to the wept
in the vicinity cf Chicago a huge

Yorkers, and Canada summer
qiarters. When the able New
York editor gets this paper he will
probably haul down the first vol
ume of the new century dictionary
to strensthen his vocabulary.
Ordinary language wouldn't dol
justice to the occasion.
The wanes of sin are death, and
deeds conformable to immorality
and vice cannot result in any other
end, is pretty well illustrated in
the case of Kay Hamilton and wife
at Atlantic city. The woman was
Ioadinjn immoral life when the
marriage was contracted, and the
recent tragedy wherein she at
tempted to slash her husband with
a knife, and did inflict a fata!
wound upon tho nurse girl who had
charge of the infant child of the
enra-cd wife, was but a natural
result of crimes of that nature.
