POSSIBILITIES IX GLASS.
YVe May Live in Transparent II onsen
and Coak by the Sun's Heat.
l'arper's Mj? ine.
Legend tells of the lost invention
ot '-lualleable glass." Tibeiius is
said ti haye discouraged a genius
who tounyt the secret by beheading
him, fearing the innovation would
reduce the valne of geld. It is also
recorded tbat Cardinal Richelieu
was presented with a bust oi nial
letib e glass by a chemist, wh pur
posely let it fall into iiajaieurs,
and nunded it be fere his eves with
a hammer. The inventor was
promptly rewarded by perpetual
impr sooment, lest his ingenuity
sttuld ruin the "Tested inieresi" t
French manufacturers. But if
glass may xit ape tho metala jov
malleability, it may imitate them
in another respect just as impor
tant. A more fortunate Ficnch
man (M. de la Ua?tie; has within a
few yeais introduced inio Euiwpe a
t' ausmuied glass, which, hecla:ms.
may displace est iron. If it lu
fills his expectations it will ma:k a
new era in glass, and tbe old adage
'as buttle as glass'" will be snc
cecded by a new n?. as touh as
glass." By his process railway
sleepers, fence pests, drain p pes.
tanks, etc., aie cast in molds, aad
so toughened by a bath in oils as
to be stronger then iicn, though
much lighter, and coating one
third as much. But it i9 questioned
whether his results reach what is
claimed for the process.
The-e undeveloped toughening
piocesses augur astounding changes
in the lutuic of glass. "G ass
iiou?ev may become t'e fashion,
ad we would have to reverse our
proverb about them, for they
would be bomb proof. Already
tianspavent glass bricks are made.
Extending the possibilities of glass
a little further, why may we net
build the enlae slruc-.ure ot glass:
The walls might be cemented
blocks cast like hewn stone, but
aoslucenf, and of any color. One
could thus inhabit a huge pile of
amber or of gigantic gems. The
windows could be multiform, some
ot them telescopic, bringing distant
things near, some with lenses r
minors guiding the focussed sun's
heat for culinary and comfortable
purposes, otlitis straining out the
lijlht or chemic ravs. Tapestries,
furniture and utensils might be
made of the universal material.
The whole would be more endura
ble than granite. No rire could
harm it; lightning would shun it.
Such a dream, blossoming from
this miraculous suostance, ma; be
realized by an Aladdin whose lamp
is of glass.

About ninety years ago a French
ship, containing treasure to the
amouBt ot about 1,000,000, was
sink by Lord Xelsoa at toe bottle
of the Nile in the Bay of Aboukir.
A company has been formed, with
a commission from tbe Egyptian
tiovei ument, to recover the treasure
'or the benefit of the shareholders,
and will shortly commence opera
tions with every prospect of suc
cess. What will be the title ot the
company to the treasure if they re
cover it?
The open sea, of course, inclad -i
ng its bottom, is not capable of be
ing used : as private propertjut .V
we presume that the coace&sio'n-'
aires, have aiisfied themselves that
the bay of Aboukir comes within
tbe rule that "'the navigable waters
included in bays and between head
lands arms of the sea belong to the
sovereign of the adjoining territory,
as being necessary to the safety of
fie nation, and to the undisturbed
. 'd of the neighboring shores."
The right to search, therefore, is
probably well derived, and we
think it also reasonably clear that
any claim of the piesent Fiench
Government as representing tbe
original owners of the treasure, or
ibe English Government as repre-
nting the lights of those entitled
. the trcasuie as a prize of war,
would be barred in international
: w by lapse of time.

ancient times had the solemnity

There is a story of a man who

Giving a rirg is supposed to in

seeing that a circle is endless.
A man got 'married because he
had bought a piece of siik cheap it

Under tbe Roman empire mar

hence vie read of men "putting

A mong the Jews the rule was for
a maiden te marry om the fourth
and a widow on the fifth day of the
week not earlier.
In Jewish marriages the woman
is set on the right, but throughout
Chmtendon her place in the cere

In a Raman marriage the bride
was purchased by the bridegroom's
payment of three pieces of copper
money to her parents.
The Russians have a story of a
widow who was so unconsolable

Tbe custom f pfcttiag a reil

Kissing the bride the moment
the marriage ceremonial ended,
though not now prescribed by tho

formerly was an inperative act on
the part of the bridegroom.
The early marriage eremonr
