Wheat in Eastern Oregon is yield
ing better than was expected,
especially so in the Grande Konde
and Umpaqua valleys. The gen
eral vield of wheat in Oregon will
; equal that of former years. True,
: the itot weather and dry winds
had a very injurious effect and
these raused the fchortagc in the
expected yield. The acreage has
been largely increased, and it is
by their increased acreage that the
average crop will be obtained. Bv
the remark, that such a county r.r
such a section would have an aver
age yield, is meant that the amount
for shipment will equal that of
former years, though the amount
per acre may be lessened.
In the counties adjoining Sher
man and Wasco there will not be
more than enough wheat for home

CANADA'S ATTITUDE.
There has been a marked change
in the attitude of Canada toward
(kc United states, and our Cana
dian friends do not appear so
blood-thirsty as they did a few
laysago. I'.efore ihey had heard
from England they were as belli
gerent as bantams. They wanted
Admiral Ileneage to take his fleet
ami make a cruise from Onalasfca's
hore down to San l'iego, destroy
ing every revenue" cutter which
dared t show itself, buininit and
destroying every seacoast town,
and city from Sitka t Wiliningtcit. !
.Nothing would satisfy them b'.it j
bright red pore, in wholesale lot.-,j
and their voice was still tor war,
and plenty of it.
Now. however, their tone is
modified. A dispatch from Mon
treal says that the Imperial author
ities have decided that British
rights in 1 Seining sea must bo pro
tected from furtker American out
rage. That is all right. No
American will take any exception
to such a decision, but it will be
apparent to any one that this leaves
the door open for a full and free
inquiry as to what are British
rights in Behring sea, v
just what we wish. Such
quiry is a vary different matter
