In three years we shall reach the
four hundredth anniversary of an
crent which has been pronounced
t he greatest in human history the
discovery of America by Christo
pher Columbiii. I'y the reiuinon
' consent or mankind, this anniver
sary is regarded with extraordinary
interest. The Spanish government
began preparation long ago for
holding in that country a great
exhibition representing the arts
and industries of Spanish America.
iJut any plan which omits from its
scope the greatest of American
Republics and disregards the mar
velous development of the I'-'ng-lifih-speaking
race on this hemis
phere will bu grotesquely incom
plete. It is obvious a. so that such
an exhibition a would properly
illustrate the story o:" America dur
ing these four centuries of magic
growth should be held i n Ameri
can soil, and no more proper place
could be selected for it than "Wash-,
ington. This is the seat of our
-National government, from which
ail the Republics of Central and
South America have drawn their
inspiration, and there would be a
peculiar fitness in inviting the
nations of the earth to that spot to
see with their own eyes the state
liest structure of free government
the world has ever held.
It was proposed to celebrate this
anniversary first by u world's ex
position, and afterward by a per
manent exposition of the Three
Americas. The house committee
on Foreign Affairs,wisely we think,
rejected the idea of a world's ex
position, but approved that of a
permanent exhibition under the
joint auspices of the forty-six
states and territories, and the
sixteen independent nations of the
American continent. To carry out
this plan a national board of pro
motion, composed of the governors
of mast of the states and territories,
the mayors of leading cities, and of
which ex-Governor William Claflin
of Massachusetts, is the president,
has been formed to take the exhi
bition in charge.
Tiiey have got grit and moneys
They have money right in their
hands, and knov how to use it.
They have $10,000,000 to rebuild
Seattle, and it is at work. There
is the sound of the hammer and
the ring of the chisel on the stone.
They arc alive. Fire cannot buim
those people out."
It is evident that some striuuent
rules such as were applied at Okla
homa wi.il ba needed to keep rust
lers o;u of the Sioux reservation
befoie the lands are formally
thrown opea to settlement. These,
lands which have been so long
wasted pon a lot of lazy Indiaus
who would not work them, will be
in the greatest demand, as gocd
government laud is not to be four d
near the railroads t-veii in Dakota.
