Lodge to-day. This fixes the date
of his execution at August 23, un
less his sentence shall be com

news came late this evening, and
the prisoner was immediately noti

governor's action, and said : "I am
glad of that." lie manifested ao
unusual excitement, and talked
cooly of the turn affairs had taken.
He has had an abiding faith all
all along that something would oc
cur to prevent carrying out the
sentence of the court. Every prep
aration had been made for the ex
ecution. The gallows was com
pleted and tested to-day and found
to be in perfect condition. The
governor's action was based on the
fact that be had not sufficient time
to ttaoroughlv consider the petition
recently presented to him lor the
commutation of his sentence.

cent per pound at ibu orchard. A
large peach grower of Solano county
claims that he caa make lots ci

ing them at 1 cent per pound as they
run at the orchard. The time is past
when fruit growers can expect to
make enough money from the sale of
one crop to pay for the land upon
which the crop was grown. Or
chardist3 will have to figure closely
and find the exact cost of producing a
ton ef green fruit, and then sell at a
living profit based upon cost of pro
duction. Drviag fruit is a manufac

manufactured article should be based
upon the cost of the raw material, in
eluding the cost of manufacturing, iu
place of making the price of fresh
fruit upon the price of the dried
article, as is done at present.
'o Dress Keforaa for Her.
Philadelphia Times.
An indignant woman thus invites
men who talk about dress reform to
mind their own business: "Now,

health of petticoat? He doesn't

"Aud yon don't see how any man
could allow his wife to do anything of
the kind."
"Yes, I think so now."
"Well, Mr. Smithers, in view of
all the facts in the case, I feel justified
in asking you for a new silk dress?"
"A new silk dress?"

Ioet.r C'.ald rrovide a Method of
Poisoning to 1e Given in Sleep.
F.lectrical Engineer.
The Klectrical Engineer does not
share the feeling expressed by some
electricians that the employment
of the electric current iu capital
puuishiuent would disgrace or stigma
tize their vocation. Wo take the
libeity, however, to point out the
following paragraph trom the report
of the commissioL:
"Your commissioners are firmly
convince - that if the criminal could
be put to death iu a certain aud effica
cious manner the purpose of the law
would be achieved equally well as if
the terrors of death were enhanced by
the infliction of prolonged physical
torture before tho end was finally ac
complished. Various suggestions
have been made as to the means of
accomplishing such a result. One
has been the injection ol a violent and
sudden poison, such -as prussic acid,
by means of the hypoitermn needle,
into the body of the condemned,
which is open to the very serious ob
jection that the use of the instrument
is so associated with the practic ot
medicine and as a legitimate means of
alleviating human suffering that is is
hardly deemed advisable to urge its
application for the purpose of legal
executions against the almost un
animous protest of the medical pro-
iession. '
We are not told when and how the
medical profession waa polled on the
question, but the above paragraph
clearly implies that tne suggestion oi
poison was satisfactory but ior tne
feelings of tho doctors.
It has always seemed to us mat tne
question of simpler and more human
executions could be best met by phy
sicians. There is no doubt that
they could provide a simple method
of poisoning, which could be applied
with uo expectant attention on tne
oart of the condemned unawares.

suffering than any other means
hitherto suggested.

The cantonal authorities of tho dis

posal for the construction of a novel
kind of road which has been submit
ted to them through the Central
Government at Berne. This road
would conduct the so-called Ooer
haupt, or highest point of Pilatus,
with the Klimsennhoro. The object
is to make the ascent of the moun
tain easier ou the northern side and
to shorten the ascent for tourista
comin from Hergiswyl. The differ
ence iu level between the two points
is set down at l'J4 metres, thi dis
tance between them at 4G5 metres.
The read apparatus would consist of
six. wire cables, quite independent of
one another, on which six liht pulley
wheels would move, and front these
wheels a small omnibus, capable of
carrying eight persons, would hang.
The omnibus will be drawn by a rope
attached to a steam engine to be
