WILL MERE BE A SHORTAGE
Some persons it upjiears have
leen surmising that there was
danger of a horta in tlie supply
of beef cattle, and that there was
actually .linger of a beef famine.
The data from which they draw
these conclusions it is difficult to
i-oujecture the sour -e of. C ci tain-
ly they do not exist as facts. An
astern pajr, in viewing this fub-'
ject says that if any persons have
been frightened by recent minors
of a toiniir' deficiency in the beef :
unlv of the countrv, they can j
find reassurance in this jears-
t.. . ii, .

ment on farm animals. To put the j

fd by the last report. If we ex
amine tin' matter more in detail,
the increase is found to have gone
on with considerable regularity
from year to year. There have
!een, of course, hard winters and
reasons of pestilence, years w hen
breeding paid well and high prices
were the rule, and years when
profits were slight ami the fatten
ing process unrenir.nerative. Yet
through it all the beef-raising busi
ness iias steadily grown, and it
promises to go on increasing quite
as rapidly as the needs of the
country demand. The areas of
pasture where cattle can be fatten
ed with little or no extraneous food
are coming to be more generally
occupied ; cattle are matured at an
earlier age than formerly, and are
more profitable because they bring
juicker returns under the modern
system of treatment, and thus de
clines in price are easier t meet.
It is true that ranch ami range
cattle are not as numerous as a
few years ago, because the pasture
areas are needed by settlers. Hut
as the bounds of the ranches aie
contracted, smaller stock farnr.s
and more careful treatment aie
resorted to: and there is no reason.
despite some recent pessimistic
predictions, to fear that the beef
upply is at all likely to fall below
the demand.
