Luther Geioole, aged IS, died two
weeks ago from the effects ot poison,
To-day i cornoner's jury rendered a
verdict holiing his stepfather and
mother, Mr. audMrs. Panne, respon
sible for his death. They were ar
rested, aud Fanne, iu an interview
to-night with the sheriff, made a con
fession iu which he stated he bought
the poison at his wife's request and
she placed it in her son s cotlee. It
was her intention, he said, to poison
another son, William, but fortunately
he drank no coffee that morning.
The motive for the crime was Mrs.
Panne's desire to cet rid of her sous,
who caused trouble, between herself
and her husband.

ed meeting of the National Wool
Growers' Association was held in this
city to-day, and passed resolutions
approving the recent decisions of the
treasury department in relation to
broken tops and garnetted waste, and
asking that like decisions be applied
to ring waste and toiled cotten tops,
which are being imported 1 in large
quantities, as they allege, iu violation
of the tariff laws. They aiso ask the
president to call a special session of
congress to revise the tariff laws and
congratulate the wool-growers in tho
United States in the somewhat im
proved condition of the wool industry
as they lielieve uue to the recent
treasury decisions.

Jacobsen, given the following des
cription of the marriage ceremonies of
the Bilvula Indians 01 British Colum
bia. An Indian who intends to
marry calls upon his intended wife's
parents and arranges with them how
much he is to pay for permission to
marry the girl. .Among people of
high descent this is done by messen
gers, sometime as many as twenty
being sent to call on the girl's father.
They are eeut by the man's parents

many instances both man and girl are
not more than 8 or 0 years eld. The
messengers co in their boats to the
1 girl's house and carry on their nego
tiations without going ashore, where
the relatives of the gir! are standing.

her ancestors, and thus the negotia
tors are carried on. Finally a num

men perform a dance. They wear

copper plates and bells. It the groom
should be a wealthy mau, who has
presented to his wife many small
copper plates, such as are used as
presents to a bride, these are carried
by the dancers. The singing master,
who licuts the drum, starts a song iu
which the dancers join. The song
used at the marriage festival is sung
in unison, while iu all other dauees
each dancer has his od tune and
song. The first dancer wears a ring
made of cedar bark. His hair is
strewn with eagle down, which flies
about when he moves and furms a
cloud arouud his head. The groom
presents the lirst dancer with a piece
of calico, which the latter tears to
pieces aud throws down in front of
each house of the village, crying,
"Help!" in order to drive away the
evil spirits. These pieces of calico
which he throws down in front of the
houses have a lucky mean'ng, and at
the same express the idea that the
groom, when he comes to be a wealthy
man, will not forget the inhabitant of
any house when giving a festival.
The dancers swing their bodies and
arms, stamp their feet and show the
copper plates to the lookers-on.
Then the bride's father brings a
great number of blankets, generally
double the 1. umber of those he had
received from the groom, and gives
them to his daughter. The bride i
oaders a few blankets to be spread i
before the groom. She sits down.
and he puts his baud upon her head.
Then the groom is given for each of
the parts of his body one or more
blankets. Finally he is given a sew
blankek. After the bride's father
has piven a blanket to each dancer
and to the drummer, the villagers are

iu the capacity t f surveyor, a reporter
obtained the following as to the
quantity aud different varieties of
timber growing within the borders of
this state as seen by him.
The lir, larch, ced ir, spruce, and
some white piue are found iu that
portion of the state lying west of the
summit of the Cascade mountains.
While the sugar, ball, and yellow
pine is only found in that portion of
the state lyiug south of the Calipooia
mountains and east of the Cascades.
Although there is stune ;hite piuo
timber within the border of this state
equal in quality to that of the Michi
gan pine, yet there is only enc loca
tion within this stute whvre the same
grows to any extent, and that is in
the Cascade mountains.
The ainouut of lir timber that is
suitable for lumber is really over
estimated, and (.n'.v those who have
j made a thorough aad persona! exaiut .

Spruce timber grows more cx eva
sively in Tillamook and Clatsop
counties thau in auv ether part of the
state. As for cedar, it grows "exten
sively in ail parts ot the State west of
the summit o! the Cascade mountains.,
and especially ws.-t tf the Coast
range ot mountains iu Coos coun y
(where grows the variety known as the
Pert Orford eedai t. , although the
nortiiwestem part of- the state pro
duces a large quantity, a different
variety of an inferior nature.
j Larch timber giows 1:1 more abun
i dance and of a better quality in the
i Cascade mountains than any other
part of the state, but is oi.'y in exten
sile tracts in a few locutions. Sugar
pine timl er is not as plentiful as the
yellow pine, being confined princi
pally to that part of the slate in the
vicinity of Graut's Pass, on the Ore
gon & Caliuuxia railroad, and also t
some extent in the Blue mountains.
The yellow and bull pine grows er
tensively in the t-ouJieni and the
southeastern part of the state.
Mr. Marye says that tine-tenths of
the timber lands thus far tiled upon
harn beiui taken up for Eastern men,
who know the value of timber and iU
scarcity in the East, and are aston
ished when they arrive here to tind
it not to be a act that Oregon's tim
ber is inexhaustible, as they have
been informed.
