hue a tall, columnar ni3ss of rotating
air. similar to that iu which the At
lantic waterspout or the famous pillar
hke duststorin of India is utneiated.
While this traveling aerial pillar, per
haps a few hundred yards in diame
ter, is rapidly gv rating, tiu ccntri
fugaT force, as Professor Ftrrel has
shown, acts as a barrier to prevent
the how of external air from all sutes
into its interior, e.ceptat and nest
the bse of the pillar. There friction
with the earth retards the gyrations
and allows the air to rush iu below
and escape upward through the flue-
hke interior as pmvertul ascending
currents.
The phenomenon, however, v.ill
not he attende i by terrific floods un
less the atmosphere is densely stored
with water vapor, as it w;s recently
in the Cayaqutta valley, and as it was
on Mav 31st in the Conemaugh vai
ley. When such is the case the
violent ascending currents suddenly
lift the vapor-laden clouds several
thousand feet above the level at
which they were previously floating,
and hurl ,hem aloft into rarefied and
cold regions of the atmosphere, where
their vapor is instantly condensed
into many tons of water. Could the
water fall as last as condensed it
would be comparatively harmless.
But the continuous uprising currents
support this mass of wsUr at the high
level, and as their own vast volumes
of vapor risin are condensed they a d
to the water already accumulated
thousands of feet above the earth's
surface makiug, so to speak, a lake
in Inch air.
As the w hirlw ind weakens or passes
from beneath the vast body of water,
which its ascending currents have
geuerated and upheld iu the upper
story of the atmosphere, the aqueous
mass, 110 longer supported, drops w mi
everincrcasiug gravitational force to
the earth. In severe cloudburst the
water dots not fall as rain, hut in
sheets and streams, sometimes un
broken for many seconds. The cloud
burst of IS.".S at Ilollidaysburg, Pa.,
excavated many holes iu the ground,

feet in "diameter and trom three to six

New York Times.
Dr. Sauermauu, whose high reputa
tion among the physiological societi s
of the world gives great weight to his
conclusions, has lately made a series
of investigations into the (fleet that
cayenne pepper has upou birds, f. wis,
pigeons, and other species of the
feathered family. These investiga
tions were undertaken in connection
with the observed fact that canaries
fed with cayenne pepper acquire a
ruddy plunia; . This diet was found
only to produce the effect stated upon
young birds when given to them he
fore they moulted. The color of the
feathers of the old birds was not
affected at all, although a consider
able amount ofr the pepper was given
it elifferent times, extending oer an
interval of several weeks. Moisture
was found t. facilitate the change of
color to a ruddy hue which was again
discharged under the influence of sun
light or of a cold, dry atmosphere.
The whole of the pepper is not re
quired to produce the change, a por
tion of it being quite inactive, as for
example the pi peri u and several ex
tractives; similarly the red coloring
matter alone had no effect on the
color of the feathers. It is rather the
triolein, whioh occurs in the pepper
in large quautities, together with the
characteristic pigment, which brings
about the change of color by holding
the red pigment of the pepper in solu
tion. Glycerine may be used instead
of triolein to bring about the same re
sult. The same statement holds good
with regard to the feeding of birds
with aniline colors. The red pig
ment of the pepper is also stored up
in the egg yolk as well as in the
feathers. The first appearance of
this colored pigment in the yolk can
bo observed as a colored riug.f jur
days after the coinmeucetnent of feed
ing with the pigment dissolved in fat.
Continuing this diet for forty-eight
hours will result in the coloring of
the entire yolk. As these experi
ments have proved so instructive and
interesting they are to be continued
throughout the present season, when
the result will be embodied in a re
port to the Berlin Physiological
Society.

Imitation Toliarro 1 -! on Cheap

Pittsburg Commercial tiazctte.
Among the la est imitations which
have been b-i :ct.ssfuily introduced into
the tobacco trade tf this city and
other cities arc cigars the wrappers of
which are made out of a. specially
perfumed paper. A gentleman well
known in th- iron manufacturing
circles of this vicinity was the first to
intern, a reporter that smoking
materia! of this kind was now in the
maiket. He had icccntly returned
from a visit to Norfolk, Va., where
he met a drummer for a large tofcacco
factory of New York State. . The
geuilenian inf rmed tee I lttsburger
that he was then introducing an irmV "
tation cigar wrapper which was so "
deceiving in its character tiiat experts
could scarcely distinguish it from the
genuine.
This preparation was made from
rye straw, and one portion of the pro
cess was to steep the material in a
strong solution made from solution
made from tohocco stems. The grain
of the straw, together with the man
ner in which the material was dressed,
would lead any person to suppose
that it was a sample of the leaf used
in making wrappers for cigars of a
more than ordinary quality. The
flavor of tobacco was also present,
owing to the paper having been im
mersed in the solution made from the
genuine article.
The gentleman subsequently exam
ined cigars on sale in Norfolk and dis
covered that they were made with
these patect wrappers. The samples
examined were of an extra-tine
quality.

- John H. (iantt. the celebrated
tramp printer, has been iu this city
during the past three days. This re
markable man, who is known in al
most every printing establishment in
the Central aud Southern States, is
seventy yean of age and has been
constantly on the tramp since the
close of the civil war. The longest
fi-itin li pviir rroalfk u'a in 1
when he left this citv and traveled
through all of the States between

same routo, reaching Cassopolis,
Mich., just six moi'ths from the time
he left here. He l ept a careful re
cord of the number of miles walked,
and the entire length of the journey
was 2S00 miles. For a man then G5
years of age this certainly was a re
markable feat. The veteran printer
had a great failing for drink, but his
constant indulgence does not seem to
impair his mental ficulties, and he
possesses a cmarkahle fund of iu;or
