Csops Almest a Failure in Crook CointT i
Developments Aloag the Santiam.
Salem Statesman.
Hon. John Minto returned yes
terday from the Des Chutes coun
try, south of Prineville, bringing
with him 200 head of merino sheep.
He lft here June 20th. going up
the Santiam, along the line or the
O. P. railroad, but crossed the
summit of the Cascades at the- old
Minto Pass. He stopped & th
head of the Metolias, five- vailes
east of the summit, on the 23d,
and ice formed during that night.
He found the settlers in the south
east corner of Marion coui.ty with
two wants. First, they want the
country surveyed; second, they
want a common road legalized.
These should be attended to at
once.
There are many men in there,
some of whom are evidently merely
locatois for richer men and syndi
cates who wish to gather in the
timber land. Nat Bowman is
making improvements at the sul-
pour springs m uie jnuep-nueiice
valley. He is a common came.,
with a little pack tram, for the
other sett'ers there, and is evident -
ly beginning to develop the region

ofl the banks of the Marion
river at Catch's rails, which is
about seventy-five miles southeast
of Salem, and :s the head of trout
fishing in the North Santiam
system of streams. The name was
given to these iails fifteen years
ago in honor of Prof. Gatch, who
was then president of the Wil
lamette University.
Mr. Minto said 'further: "I find
that the drouth and frost combined
have destroyed crop prospects to
J such an extent that there is a set
tled apprehension as to the near
future among the people of Crook
county. The little settlement on
the Matolias and the settlement on
Squaw creek, occupying irrigated
farms are the exceptions. Aside
from these the county generally
shows from a half crop to a total
failure, as it fell under my observa
tion." Ori'son Press Association. j
It appears that the oflicers of the j
state press association have ignor-;
cd the action of last year and ap
pointed a day of meeting, regard
less thereof, as will appear by the
following card, signed by President '
Bell and Secretary Nickell : "The
annual session of the Oregon Press
association is called to meet at
Newport, Ya.juina Bay, Friday,
August 2.'Jd, 1SSD, holding over the
24th. Arrangements have been
made to secure the usual reduction
of fares over railroads, and a pro
gramme of interest to the craft is
being prepared. There should do
a full attendance as business of
importance will be transacted."
The time named above will pro
bably bo generally satisfactory, so
it won't make any difference, but
it looks like a slip shod wav f
doing business bv an association
