An I'nfortunat Wtmii.
Yesterday morning a well
dressed, inodest appearing woman,
aged about 3j, arrived in this city
accompanied by her little daugh
ter, a child of about seven years.
Shortly after her arrival Marshal
Hodman received a telegram from
the city marshal at Medford to
place her under arrest, for which
a warrant had been issued there.
He did so, and telegraphed back,
asking what was the charge against
the woman. The reply came, "No
charge, but hold "her." The
woman appealed for protection at
the hotel, saying that she had
committed no crime, but was try
ing to escape from her husband
ami to keep her own child. She
told a pitiful story, the substance
of which ia that she has for several
years conducted a restaurant at
Sacramento. Her name is M. C,
Hussey. Her husband, who often
got drunk, a short time ago took
the littlo girl and went to Medford.
She could not bear to be separated
from the child and followed then..
Thursday while her husband was
in the country she took the little
girl and came to this city, intend
ing to go to Yaquina and" take the
steamer on her return to Sacra
mento, when she was arrested.
She paid she would sooner die than
give up her child, and that her
husband had threatened to kill
both her and the child, and that
she would not return to him. An
officer will arrive this morning
from Medford after her, but if her
story is correct, it would seem
difficult to hold her on a charge of
stealing her own child.

A smile and softly chuckled to
himself and said : "I've got it at

THE ASTORIA & 8. C. RAILWAY.
Tna Company Means Business -?rreii of
the Work of Coagtracuon.
In view of the work undertaken
by the Albany & Astoria Railway
Company of this city, the progress
that is being made' on the other
end of the line will be of interest to
the people here.
Mr. William Reid. president of
the Astoria & South Coast Kail
road Company, informs an Oregou
ian reporter that the Pullman Car
Com pan , of Illinois has completed
the first live freight cars, standard
gauge, twenty tons capacity, for
the Astoria & South Coast road,
which were shipped to St. Louis,
there to be loaded -jrith rails for
Astoria. The other twenty freight
cars, twenty-fiye tons capacity,
are now under conetructiou by the
Pullman company, to be finished
by the 2Sth of July ami then sent
to St. Louis for the rails there, and
the remaining five Hat cars will
reach St. Louis from Pullman on
the 8th of August. These cars are
marked "Astoria & South Coast
Railway," and will bring with
them all the rails necessary to 'ay
the track from Young's Pay to the
Ocean house. The locomotive No.
1 was nspected at Danville, 111..
and will reach Astoria in fourteen
or sixteen davs.
The company has now under
consideration an otter ot liwu tons
of fifty-pound steel rails from Chi
cago, to complete the road from
Young's bay to the heart of the !
citv of Astoria ami extend the line
nuth ward from the ocean shores
to a tine timber region, lwo sur
veying parti s have been formed'
by F. K. Habersham, the engineer.
One to locate the line from the
Ocean house, and the other to lo
cate that portion from the Wil
lamette Valley across the coast
range to Astoria, ihehrst excur
sion coach is to arrive at Astoria
about the and of August, and
whenever the first ten miles be
yond the Ocean house have been
surveyed by the engineers, the
construction companv will com
mence work expected about the
end o: this month on the grading.
s the rails have to wait for
Astoria Railway Company's
"t j
cars to be constructed at Pullman,
in order to bring these rails over
land in that company's own cars,
it is net expected that tratklaying
will be completed and the road Li
running operation to the Ocean
house until the end of August.
All of the ties, 41,000, for the four
teen miles are now lving delivered
on the grade at Skipaunon, ready-
to be laul down whenever the loco
motive arrives. This weighs
twenty-eight tons and is a Rogers
make, cylinders 15x22, standard
gauge.
Ttie contractors wiil commence
work not later than the 5th of
August, and will continue grading
during the fall and winter season
a id hope to reach a fine timber
legion tributary to Astoria, with
track laid thereto, by the last
week of January, unless work is
stopped by severe rains or some
unforseen occurrence. Mr. Reed
states that the contract has been
let for and work commenced on
one mile of the trestle work between;
t'ne west shore of Young's bay and
to toe eieumel ol that river, and
when completed in six weeks an
other contract will be let for the
eat portion of that bridge from the
channel, '-"JoO feet, to Smith's
Point on the Astoria sida and con
tinned into tire city, leaving the
draws-pan uncompleted and open
until the iron work arrives from
tiie East in Octolxr next.
The f ile of the passenger depot
in Astoria has not yet been dc
tfiinined, but a contract has been
let for the construction of the
Astoria terminus and passenger
depot wherever located by the
board of directors. Various liberal
offers have been made for sites for
a passenger depot at the south end
ot Astoria, below Is more 8 can
nery, but the general opinion
seems to be that the line should
be extended into the city as far as
Lafayette street, where a passenger
depot will be built if the owners of
property in that vicinity, to be im
proved by the depot, will vacate
fifteen or twenty feet adjoining
that street.
