ADVICES FKOM IIAVTI.
Hippolyte's Fo.-ces Will Soon
Capture I'ort-au-rrincc.
Nr.w Yoti., June 27, The first
authentic news from Hayti in two
mouths came yesterday,
The Etei.ir.er Priiee Wilhelm,which
left Port-au Prnce June 20, arrivti
yestc day, and brought 25 mcrchantsj
who say u.at it is only a que3tiou oi
time when Hinnolyte's army will
drive Lecitin?e aad his friends from
Po-t-au-PtInce.
The reason they left Port-au-Prince
was because affairs in Hayti had
reached such a point that business
was out of the question. Everything
is staguaot and tlie town is oven .in
with ruffians. The-e is almost no
money at all, aud those who can in
any
wav get lic:a ot a utile are
leivine the country. Prvisiors are
high, and flour is soiling at 520 a
barrel, and the poorer classes aic
sabering for the cecessaric i of life,
and conspquently are on the vrge of
an insur rection.
In the hills behead Port-au-Priace
the armies of Uippw'ytc lie encamped
around ibec:ty, which is iu a meas
ure in a sUte of siege.
Among the pa3itngers on the
steamship Trincc Wilhelm was C. B,
Ni'ou, a resident of this city, who
fur montliB ago went to Hayti t
enter the employ of Legitime as en
gineer of a mai.of-war. He said
that he returned because he found
the dtnation there too warm for him.
Legitime stood little chance against
Hippolyte, who3e army was well
equipped and numbered 10,000
stronger.
When tlie speaker left, Hipp 1 te's
troops were within four miles of
Port-au-Piiace by land and fourteen
by sea. He said that tho rea.oa for
Hippolyte's not rnshiag on Port-an-Priace
immediately was because he
was awa;ting the 8'gnal from friends
in the city.
Legitimes former commaaaer-in-
chief, General Pjquaat, evacuated
Grand Saline for ihe consideration of
$250,13, and succeeded in leaving
the island with the money, vnree
ministers of war held sway for as
many months, and one of these, Gen
eral Ancelm Prophet, appropriated
$350,000 government money and re
signed. A "3 f the Clyde 6lcamcr Uzama
being cptured by Haytian gunbeatr,
thetratliot thematler was. JNUson
said, that the vessel was only held
for a little over three hours and was
released when Captain Kellogg, of
tbe United States steamer Ossippc;,
made tbo demand upon Legitime. At
first the demand was rcinsed, ex rep t
under the conditions that the Ozama
would not go to Gonaivcs. Captain
Kellos wrote upon the bacW of
Legitime's note that if the vc stl was
noi re'eased in five hours and $50C0
paid over by Legitime he would
bombard the city.
The demwl was immediately com
plied with, and the 30bJ paid to
Captain Kellogg.
