W. L. Ilardison. an oil 8famer,
belonging to the Missouri Transfer
Company, of St. Paul, was burned
attne i!ock here this morning. The
vessel arrived here yesterday and
was taking on a load of oil, con
tinuing to load until midnight.
The lire was discovered about 1
o'clock, and it is not known how
it originated. About 2000 barrels
of oil were in her tanku. Ten men
were aboard the vessel, but no
lives were lost. The ship and
cargo are a total loss. Tho loss is
about $80,000 besides the oil that
was aboard.

steamer W. L. llardison, which
left San Francisco on Saturday
last, took lire and was burned this
morning. Tlie vessel will be a to
tal loss. The llardison has lor

der command of Captain Hall, car
rying oil from this port to San
Francisco. The vessel was owned
by (JrHIit. Coit A Co., of San Fran

ashore is thirteen miles south of
Manzanilla (the nearest telegraph
station) and 150 miles north ot
Archipulco, where the agent of the
company lives. Tho agont received
news from Manzanilla that the

gone to the sjtot, and we expect to
hear from there in a day r two, as
ne would go to Manzanilla to tele
graph the particulars as soon as he
could get then.
Sheep Range Harncel.

broke out on the sheep ranges
about fifteen miles east of town
yesterday afternoon and raged all
night, burning thousands of acres
of sheep feed. The -lire is still
burning, and the damage cannot
be ascertained at the present tim".

tho Kadman trouble to-day the
sheriff left Missoula with a posse
of ninety men to make a second
attempt to secure the murderers,
who were not caught, as stated in
the first report. One murderer
was shot in attempting to escape.

lector of customs at Beaufort, Soutlt
Carolina. (Mr. Smalls is an ex-
member of congress and a colorel
man. He is well known throughout
the country asd had a hard fight to
get this little position on account of
the hot tight made against him by
republicans from his state.
The civil service commissioner be
fore leaving for the West addressed a
letter to the president asking him ta
have all the appointment made in the
census bureau taken from its lists of
eligiblea. It is not likely that the
president will cemply with this re
quest as most people believe that
cougrc-s intended these appointments
to be made outside of the civil see-
ice rules.
