Shortly before noon yesterday, a
lire alarm was sounded to which

of chairs. Engine . Company' No.
1 through some mistake fastened
their hose to Engine No. '2, and
whenthe first stream began playing
from their nozzle they chsered
lustily for first water, but thd fire
lads of No. '2 soon saw the condition
of things and hastened to claim
first water themselves. A stream
was soon plaring also from Engine '
So. 1 and the fire was quickly ex-
tinquished. Inn loss was about
00, ami there was no insurance.
Tho .fire originated from the fur
nace; .n the drying room. The
mairf factory caught fire twice, but
was quickly extinguished.

twenty miles of road on the Ore
gon Pacific eastward from this city.
The contract begins five miles this
side of the tunnel, including it and
extending fifteen miles east of it,
which will complete the road al
most to the summit, about 00 milt s
easi of Albany. The com cany al
ready has about four miles of road
completed at the summit. -
These gentlemen, who an; expe
rienced railroad contractors.having
jint completed a big contract on
the Atchison, Topeka it Santa Fe
road, will begin work at once,
and a thousand or mora men will
within a few days bo put to work
on the road.
They will make a trip over th
road Wednesday vith a view of
purchasing the plant of Messrs.
Jacobs or Neugns, which w'fil be
added to their own plant.
The Oregon Pacific Co. has 9
miles of steel rails in thi:4 city, 111
miles in Sau Francisco, and it is
said has just completed a purchase

the load tnrough to J.oise City.
