RAILROAD MATTERS l.X UBX
ICl'AL. The result of the recent railroad
election cf lirectors in the city of
Portland, in which Villard and
Elijah Smith were contestants,
and the interests of the Northern
Pacific, Transcontncntal and O.
K. t X. companies were directly
and the Union Pacific indirectly
interested, seems to have been
practically si drawn battle, neither
Hide having gained just what they
desired, namely the supremacy in
control. Concessions were mad;
upon both sides, and by the con
cessions made by the Northern
Pacific or Villard men it is said
that the Union Pacific has gained
what it has been seeking, the
chance of completing its Washing
ton territory lines, and eventually
making a sound terminus.
One of the Elijah Smith party is
reported a.-? saying: "Our visit
may bear fruit in the construction
of a line to the Sound, probably
from Umatilla by way of North
Yakima and the Natchez pass.
Tacoma will not be ignored, and it
is po.-fsiblo the Mne may be extend
ed to Port Townsend, although
that is a matter of further consider
ation, and will depend upon the
result of an investigation of the
resources ot the country along the
proposed line, the cost of construc
tion, maintenance and operation.
It is the purpose of the Union
Pacifo to find n Hound terminus.
If Tacoma can afford the facilities,
it will be some years at least
before the line will be extended
any further. Hut little reliance ia
plated in the peace established at t
Portland Monday, unless the Union !
Pacific can place itself in an inde
pendent position. A road with its
terminus in Portland cannot com
pete with one having Us terminus
on the Sound. L do not know
whether tho Union Pacific will be
disposed to accept the fourth clause
of the agreement offered at Port
land. This clause was the on'y
one not accented, and relate to a
traffic arrangement by which the
TEMPERANCE BOTES.
OBbributet ly the W C. T. V
Rhoie Island follows in the wake
of Massachusetts and Penusyl
yania. The amendment is lo t by
a considerable majority.
JULIUS GEADWOHL'S
G. VV.
S M ITH,
The United states Brewery Ae-
sociation has appropriated the
following sums to defeat prohibi
tion : Dakota $2000 ; Rhode Island
$3,500 ; Connecticut $2500.
A movement has been started in
Brooklyn, by Roman Catholic
priests to enforce the laws against
opening the 6aloons on Sabbath.
The work is under the auspieies of
Fathers Fransioli, O'Hare and
Barry. Immense meetings are
held and men of all creeds and
political views are welcomed to the
pUtform. The prayers of thou
sands will ascend for their success
in this good work.
The prohibitory amendment is
defeated in Pennsylvania by an
over whelming majority. Scarcely
an occasional observer, much less
a close student of the times could
have predicted any other result.
The great state was of two mreh
importance for the liquor men to
lose, hence money .vas poured out
like water, and although Pennsyl
vania ia a state of churches and of
temperance societies, and these
did not fail to do their duty in the
great fight, yet there was found
numbers who would sell not only
their vote, but their very soul?, ifj
they could, for money and rum.
Wilber V. Grafts, the grand Sun
day school worker, will be in Ore
gon in July. His stay is very
limited and he can only hold
meetings at three points, Portland,
Salem and Corvallis. The man
agers of the O. P. 11. R, have
offered to send a special train to i
return those who may go to Cor- j
vallis to hear Mr. Crafts, after the
lecture in the evening. He will
hold an afternoon meeting, and as
the Albany people would go up on
the 1 o'clock train, they could be
present at that meeting. Forty
persons are required to secure a
train. We should have that num
ber and mote, as we very seldom
hare the opportunity of hearing
such a distinguished writer and
speaker.
