THE NEXT CENSUS.
E. L. Elliott, actuary of the
United States treasury department
says that tho population of the
United ;States now is 02,5)00,000,
and he believes that by the time
the next census has been taken,
our population will have beei.
swelled to nearly ,000,000 tier
sons. He estimates that since the
outbreak of the civil war, our popu
lation has more than doubled, and
this is remarkable in view of the
terrible slaughter during those
bloody times and the obstacles to
an increase offered by the war.
The percentage of gain which fell
from 35.11 in 1800 to 22.05 in the
decade ending ten years later,
leaped upward in lSS'.J, stoping at
30.08, and it will be greater at the
expiration of the next ten years.
The growth of the nation has
been marvelous. From a puny
people of less than 4,000,000 souls
in 1790, widely scattered and dis
trustful of each other, we had in
creased to 5,3:8,483 in 1S00, 7,230,
S80 in 1810, l,023,822 in 1820 an J
12,800,000 in 1830. In 1840 we
numbered 17,0G!,453; in 1S50,
23,191,870, and in 1809, 31,4433,21.
The rate of increase was highest
in the decade ending 1S10, when it
reached 30.38. and lowest in the
period comprising the four years of
the war. Except for that period
also the gain has been steady.
Barring war, famine, or deadly
and widespread plagues it is esti
mated that before another fifteen
. ,i tu
years nave pasueu mc cuiuwm

reached. Assuming the rate of
increase to be 82s per cent, from
1890 to 1900 and it will certainly
be no less than this our popula
lion in the latter year should he
more than 80,000,000. Five years
later it should be 100,000,000, or
mere than that of any other country
on the globe with the three excep
tions of India and the Chinese uml
Knssians empires.
