A NARROW ESCAPE,
An Aiurrcaa Steamer Fire1 at by a
Ilaytian Steamer.
New York, June 5. The steamer
Caroline Miller arrived from bt.
Marc, Hayti, yesterday. She showed
no signs of having ben made a target,
yet Captain If red Miller, commanacr,
asserted that such was the case.
The Miller left Cape Uaytien for a
yoyage to St. Marc on May 15th.
When she had steamed some distance
out to sea a steamer was seen iu th
distance. It was the Haytian iron
clad ram, Toussaint l'Ouverture. The
ram was evidently trying to overhaul
her. The Millers engmeer was
ordered to nut on more steam aud
the vessel's speed soon increaFtd per
ceDtiblv.
No sooner was this observed on
tho Toussaint that a shot came
wJMtUnft -wr ; Jheyater. .falling a
victim. Another 'and 'another'
followed, while the Toussaint in
creased her speed. Shots now began
to fly thick and fast around the
Miller, thought, strange to say, none
of them struck her. Captain Miller
ordered the American flag raised and
the Stars and Stripes were unfurled
at the Miller's peak. Still the firing
continued, The Miller, however,
was runninc fully eleven knots and
gradually draw , out of range of the
guns. The Toussaint finally gave up
the chase and the Miller ran into M,
Marc on the 16th, unharmed. The
firing continued for two hours.
Why Illlnolsans Are Called Suckers
Galesburg Register,
The fit st settlements of Illinois
were made in the southern portioo
ef the State. The land was new
and rich, and yielded abundantly
with but little cultivation. But
there were no means of transporta
tion, er markets, and money was
scarce and hard to get, an old
fashioned picayune looking cs big
as the bottom of a halt-bushel, and
was earrfully hoarded to meet
some contingency. As a result of
this state of things all the surplus
population regularly cvary spring
took up their line of march to the
Galena lend mines, where they
worked during the summer, and
as regularly every falljtook rjp,tij;;ir
line of march for their homes in
the southern part of the State. This
being the habit of tLat numerous
family of fish called tuckers, which
then, as now, ascended the streams
in the spriDg aud descended in the
fall, the bands of Illinois settlers
fluctuating between their homes
and the mines Eoon became known
js suckers, and later on the name
was generally applied, and Illinois
became known as the Sucktr State,
atd her people as suckers.

"This was sometime a paradox," as
Hamlet says. Since, however, the
people cf America aud other 'ands
have been enabled to pit llostcttcr's
Stcmah Hitters against that unseen
foe, malaria, it is no longer a paradox,
but au easy possibility. Whatever
malaria evolves its mitty venom to
poison the air, and decaying un whole
some vegetation impregnate r the
water, there, in the very stronghold

Europe Must Not Dominate the

COLOMBIA'S BIG BROTHER.
She Looks Upon the United States With
Confidence and Respect A
Few Facts.
The Porrenir of Carthagena, the
Atlantic seaport of the republic of
Colombia, prints au article which is
supposed to have been written, if not
by the President of the Colombian
republic himself, then by somebody
representing his views, with other
articles urging Colombian! to look to
Diction or the Panal
Lesseps concession for whiohw id be
forfeited in two years. An inspired
articl in the Pervenir says:
"Since the news which was current
some months age was confirmed re
specting tho bankruptcy of the Pana
ma Canal Company, wc have thought
of seriously alluding to the subject
knot with the object of deploring it as
a great mistortune ana one wnicn
falls heaviest on our country, and
which has happened owing to the
anarchy and mismanagement which
have been noticeable in thecinal;
bat rather for the purpose of exciting
the patriotism of these who lead the
Regeneration party, and of doing so
by the employment of truthful lan
guage, and in such a direction that
ideas shall be retdy for action when
the failure of the contract made with
M. De Lesseps shall be officiary an
nounced, and that thus it shall be
possible to carry the work to a con
clusion by means of a well-meditated
contract, to be made with tho person
:r government offering the best
guaranties that the new work will be
executed with that judgment and
honor which are demanded by the
great social and pecuniary interests
involved in a work of this nature.
"It is time that we ot the Southern
nations, and who, relatively speakiug,
are feeble, should rely on no other as
sistance for the spread of our indus
tries aud to restrain the tendencies
'of the many of the European govern
ments' save that which can bo given
by our brothers of tho north, since
they are as interested as are those in
the other parts of the two continents
that only American interests should
prevail throughout the breadth and
length of the laud, and that for tliee
reasons the aspirations of the w.,ole
family should tend to aih'rn. out
rights and institutions by means of
unity of action.
"There will be few who will uota'
tach to thi" principle the importance
it demands, since without doubt it
will afford us tho inestimable advant
age of insuriug that our form of
government, which cost so much
blood during our great war, will be
respected as it should be by those
who have converted colonization into
a leading element of their well-being.
We find the fact still evident as
to the noble conduct of the Govern
ment of the United States towards
Colombia during the war of 1885,
aud which was eliown by the United.
States having dispatched upward of
1000 men to restrain the bandits who
had seized Colon, and that thes men
were withdrawn the moment the
work had been accomplished whioh
had beeu imposed on them by friend
ship, and without having executed,
daring their permanence in Colombia
territory, the slightest disorder or
having manifested tho most insignifi
cant tendency to depress our nation
ality? "It is our opinion that the Pan,
ma Canal will be opened, owsug to
the necessity felt by the commercial
world for that commodious and cheap
route, bnt in tru h we mast say that
no other country save that of North
America can carry to a happy con
clusion the great work, since only
that country possesses the requisites
which are necessary to finish it, and
which are: An abundance of money,
fitting machinery, which cannot be
found in other countries, and habit
of - work united to a reasonable
economy in expenditures."
lhe rorvenir recalls that it said ed
itorially in 1884, after quotio the
ex. sting treaty between the United
States and that ooantry:
"With or without the treaty the
Government of the United States can
militarily occupy the isthmus. Has
Great Britain not so done, and is it
not so doing in Egypt, without the
slightest trace of right derived f-om
any pnor agreement? vvho has im
peded this? Who. baa protested
against it?
There is not one country in all
Europe which would dare to declare
war against tho United states.'
"Ko tear need be telt ot violent ag
gression by the United States, which
fully understood that Washington
and Bolivar were men of sinuler
cnaracter, and that it it the duty cf
the North American people to exer
cise power by moral anion ana
tuition, and never by crude egotism,
in those regions which are studiously
constructing a similar system of
government."
