IMPROVEMENTS.
New inventions are constantly
succeeding old ones. The tele
phone was thought to be the acme
of attainment in the line, but now
comes the writing telegraph which
it is said will supercede the tele
phone. The Telegram discribes it as
being similar to the telephone,
except that the handwriting is
transmitted instead of the sound.
The operator sits at his desk,
makes connection with some other
instrument and writes his message.
The party addressed may or may
not be at his place of business ; the
message is transmitted just the
same. The new instrument has
been in use in New York for some
fifteen months, and is specially
osed in transmitting information of
the progress of baseball games,
races and other sporting events to
business houses and newspapers in
the city, interested in these mat
ters. It will be usetal, however,
lor commercial business as well,
and is particularly valuable for
private wires. The important
elements of secrecy and indiffer
ence to noise are secured by the
writing telegraph. The store or
ffice may be filled with noisy
people, yet the little instrument
proceeds to business without hind
ranee. Instead of shouting an
rder to a business house, the mer
chant sits down and noiselessly
writes it. Two copies of the mes
sage are made. One remains in
the possession of the sender, and
the other the receiver, ons being a
check ob the other, thus avoiding
the misunderstanding so frequently
the result of the use of the tele
phone. The cost of maintaining
an exchange is less than that of
the telephone, and rates U patrons
are therefore reduced. In writing
the stylus or pen is held in the
writer's hand as in ordinary writ
ing. The characters are trans
mitted to the receiving instrument
and shaped there one by one on
paper pnl.ed uniformly underneath
by clockwork.
"This transmitter we have here,"
said Mr. Iladley in his address,
"is a new one. The inventor ob
tained his result from a series of
eteel tongues arranged in a vertical
position and placed at right angles
to each other. To each tongue is
connected a given resistance of
German silver wire. The upper
ends of these tongues are tipped
with platinum in order to prevent
oxidization from strong currents.
The receirer consists of two pair of
magnets, each in circuit with one
of the line wires, and placed at
right angles to each other. The
rod wbJch carries the pen and the
armature has a spring wire pro
jecting at its base, and fastened at
a point where the two poles would
meet if extended. The armature
quickly responds to the varying
attraction of the magnets, and its
rod extends above the top of the
case and carries a pen. This pen
is fed through a siphon from an
inkwell, by what is known as
capillary attraction."
The recent death of Laura Bridg-
man, released from the thralldom
of earth, a spirit of courage, re
finement and depth of capabilities
seldom reached by human beings.
She was blind and deaf and dumb
from infancy, and yet lived, learned
and showed a cultivated mind
that grasped the universe as com
pletely almost as any human being.
As the Alta aptly states it by her
hand and the sense of touch alone,
the soul and sense were reached.
She acquired the alphabet, learned
to read an embossed page, learned
the names and uses of objects, had
her soul opened to the religious
idea learned to write sa that she
could give expression to her
thoughts on paper as well as by
the conventional sign language, in
which she was expert, and in fine,
she was educated until she was a
sentient, conscious part of the age
i eh, lived. The soul in
ill Vi"
the windowless and silent house
loirnAfl that, smitten as it was, the
body that imprisoned it lived, and
that it mu3t die, but with this sad
collateral of self-consciousness was
a lied the hope that the crumbling
of those prison walls meant sight
and hearing to the fpirit that eat
within eyeless and voiceless.
Mrs. Hunt says that more than
two thirds of the present popula
tion of the United States are now
under temperance education laws.
Accepting the admitted estimate
that the entire present school
population of this country is
18.000.000. two-thirds would he
12.000.000 children for whom law
has provided the education in favor
of total abstinence that results
from learning the nature and effects
of alcoholic drinks and other
narcotics. If a knowledge of the
results of the indulgence in stimu
lants, will lead to a correction of
such habits, certainly the fact
stated gives a hopeful view for the
future.
